Laurel's first report card of the year, or have I mentioned lately that she rocks?

Laurel's school gives percentile grades for grades 1-5, so her first six weeks' report card is a world apart from her kindergarten one.

She scored a 90% or higher in all areas and 100% in spelling and math.

I've gotta say, she rocks.

I did. She says thank you!

I have a picture she drew for you to scan and e-mail you. She is fascinated that your name is just like her aunt's, only spelled one letter different. (My sister's name ends in an 'h'.)

Hooray!!! That's some rockin' grades! Percentiles, etc.

And it's not just her that rocks, it's you as a parent that rocks too.

Sometimes I worry that I'm pushing her too much in one direction or another. E.g,, she has tons of books on hand and a nice selection of age-appropriate computer games, but she doesn't do extracurricular sports like a lot of her classmates. (One goes to tae kown do three nights a week!) But she rides her bike around the patio and we play hopscotch and jump rope out there too, so I think we're doing okay.

As a private teacher, I will be the first to lament how insane some parents are with their children. They have them in 20 different extracurricular things, and the kids are good at none of them. Instead, they're cranky, tired, and emotionally heading for a breakdown.

The best kids I've worked with are generally the ones who have time to play, but do pretty well in school too. Their extracurricular activity is limited to one or two things. Scouts and something else. If they're with me, chances are that something else is piano/voice lessons. More, when the kids actually have an interest in the token activity, that's a plus. They're there because they want to be, not because mom/dad plunked them there to keep them busy.

What you're doing is fine. Quite fine. Keep up the good work.

Laurel says thank you! She wore the butterfly barrettes you gave her to school on Monday.

She's learning new words from those Garfield books, you know.

I expect her to threaten to mail the cat to Abu Dhabi any day now.

Does she hate mondays now, too?

Yes.

But she doesn't crave lasagna... yet.

Laurel says thank you and she thinks you rock, too.

She knows you as the lady that posts great pictures of Chaz, Asia and Romo. (:
