It occurs to me that I get way too punchy when I'm sick. I always thought I'd get punchy -- maybe even funny -- when I'm drinking, but I don't

Samantha was the name of the first and very dearest cat that has ever owned me (they own us, you know, we never own them). She was a Russian Blue and had a very similar personality to my Biko Mira, even though Biko is a Siamese (tortie point). I'm curious about what breed your Sammy was.
I don't know what breed she was ... a she owned a family friend until he moved into an appartment that didn't allow pets. I'll see if I can dig up a picture of her. I don't remember much except that she was black and white ...
CT purrs like that. He also rarely meows. One time he did and I thought I'd hurt him or something, but I guess in the mornings, he actually says good morning to everyone, and then basically is silent the rest of the day. The other cat on the other hand never shuts up and purrs incredibly loudly.
Most cats have a language all their own. They have distinct words that they use and a very specific way of communicating with other people (2 legged people as well as the 4 legged kind). If you observe carefully you can learn their language (and, I assume you already know all this).
But, cats usually don't say anything if they don't have anything to say, kind of like smart humans (a group among which I cannot count myself, in all honesty LOL).
Something to try with CT... When you come home, as soon as you walk through the door go over and very specifically greet him with obvious intent. I'll bet he responds quite well to that (most cats are very proper -- I learned most of my better manners from them). Biko Mira is quiet most of the time, but when she wants something she addresses me as a peer. Cats rarely do that with humans, I think

I'm still amused that you named him after a character in Infinite Jest. If you ever name a cat Hal Incandenza, I will swoon. Out of curiosity, what's the other cat's name?
Biko greets me in the morning, along with what I think is 'good night' about twenty minutes after we go to bed -- she'll be in another room and meow loudly, I'll reply, she'll meow back, then come into the bedroom most of the time. She usually only meows at me for a few reasons (food/water, outside, and litter box as Vogon mentioned, as well as 'pet me', 'keep petting me' and 'save me from your demon child'), but she makes really cute noises when I'm scratching her tummy or she's lying on my lap like a baby, which she periodically does when I'm sitting at the computer.
Actually, we've had CT for long before I read IJ. (Although, hm, IJ was 1996... I _think_ we've had him longer than that, but I don't quite recall.) "CT" stands for "Crooked Tail", since he was originally an abandoned cat that we took in. So, we'd just refer to him as That Crooked-Tail Cat, since his previous owner slammed his tail into the door a few times because he thought it was Funny. Dude's an ass, and I would like to kick him in the crotch if I ever got the chance.
And the other one is "Henry O'Brien", although everyone just calls him "Baby".
