Christian & Oliver- Love, No Longer Forbidden

“How high is the price of love?
If love were standing in front of me and asked me: “What are you prepared to give for me?”-I don’t know what I would say. Wait. Maybe I’d ask: “What have I done to you? Why did you jerk me around like that?” And then I’d shake him till his thoughts get whirled around like mine do.
A storm in a glass of water.

And still: Whatever happens and whoever sent my feelings to war: I still believe in the power of love (but please don’t tell anybody I said that :-)). Maybe I’m stupid. Maybe naïve. But maybe hope died last. Even though my heart is lying in pieces on the ground right now and other people are dancing the samba on it- I can feel that in the end love will give me a chance. It’s just that it’s hard not to lose faith. Especially when love stabs you in the back, you will have doubts. Because love also hurts. But still…
It is the greatest of all feelings. We give everything for love…Really, everything? Is that too high a price? Would we be prepared to pay for love with our lives? Yes! At least that’s what someone wrote in an article: Two young men, Christian and Oliver, suffered through humiliation, prejudices and violence- because they love each other. It’s worth it not to let go, to fight, to believe. A great and true love will always win in the end.

Christian and Oliver are heroes in my eyes. They proved: Love is made of courage.
If you’re destined for each other, the world can end- but at least you’re not alone. Love burns- but maybe that’s only true when your love isn’t big enough. Maybe sometimes you believe in the love of your life, even though they’re not the one. Maybe our feelings are too small to ever become big enough so that you can go through everything together. Like those two guys did who kept true to their love against all odds- hand in hand.

I wish I could get my courage back to leave my past behind me. With renewed strength, without old wounds. That’s why I let my soul write these words. Someday I will courageously laugh in the face of my fate- like Christian and Oliver did! “

And so I always need to explain myself in case anyone actually reads this at some point, and so that I will remember as well. This blog was written as part of a soap opera. Of course, this is me. Wonderful fans of the show have posted all the episodes on YouTube, and luckily translated them into English (Thank you, thank you thank you). Verbotene Liebe- German for Forbidden Love, has recently featured a story between two men, Christian and Oliver. It’s brilliant, fantastic, wonderful and adorable and I could go on forever! It’s been a very inspiring story. Oliver, more commonly Olli, is a man who works in his aunt’s bar in the town, who has been fully aware of his sexuality for a while now. Christian is a boxer, who discovered his preferences after falling in love with Olli. They hid their relationship for a while from friends and family and especially the men at Christian’s boxing club. After Christian won his first major title, and felt he “proved” himself by beating an experienced boxer jerk Axel, he and Olli revealed their relationship in a wonderful scene!

Unfortunately soon after, Christian is harassed by other boxers in the club, especially the homophobic Axel. Axel, upset after losing the match to a gay boxer, goes to NoLimits and beats up Olli using a nightstick. Christian and Olli try to press charges, but they are dropped due to a lack of evidence. Then they try to get newspapers to publish an article about it, so people will know, but they can’t get anyone interested. A couple weeks later, they get one article published, but it doesn’t convey their message properly. Olli ends up collapsing as a result of his previous injuries. While he is in surgery, Christian confronts his old boxing club to get people to come forward and say what they know. Someone comes forward, Olli comes out of surgery and another article is published.

The fairly long quote above was written by the character Lydia, who is Christian and Oliver’s friend/roommate. While going through a recent tough breakup, she has started this blog. The creators of the show, and obviously the writers who actually wrote the blog, decided to make the blog an actual website. Hense http://www.love-burns.de/?p=4. This blog allows the show’s viewers to comment on the soap, the blog and the relationship between Christian and Oliver. It’s amazing.

The blog itself is beautiful. “If you’re destined for each other, the world can end- but at least you’re not alone.” “Maybe I’m stupid. Maybe naïve. But maybe hope died last.” "Someday I will courageously laugh in the face of my fate." The whole passage is amazing and filled with this confused sense of longing and hope all mixed into one soul. The blog has gotten a phenomenal response from viewers. Interestingly, I’ve seen comments from Germany, the US, Mexico, Canada, Brazil, Pakistan, Australia, Denmark, Italy, Peru, The Netherlands, the Philippines, Scotland, New Zealand, Japan. Its so incredible. I can’t properly thank the writers and creators of the show, or thank Ivan enough for posting the episodes and seriously, I don’t know if Nanna realizes how many lives she’s touched by providing the English translation. This story is worldwide. It’s touching people deeply, encouraging them to try love again, making people revisit their views of homosexuality, guiding people to their sexuality and encouraging people to come out. It’s connecting people everywhere. I never for a minute believed a soap opera could ever do something like that, but it has. I am so unbelievably proud to say that I watch this show, and I love these characters.
