Supernatural 3.12 Review

Feb 25, 2008 14:14

And we've got how long until the next new episode?

Luckily I'm writing at least a few hours most days which distracts.  Makes me insane too.  'Cos the piece I want to finish is kicking my backside and has gotten all wiggly and elusive on me.  Which means the opening scene has been rewritten at least four times.  So I've been distracting myself with Dean whumpage which takes me to a happy place.  And gives me oodles more to edit.  Sheesh, brain what the hell are you smokin'?

Any way, sweets, here's my thoughts on the the last new episode for a while.  Scattered and a mite slashy, for sure, but thinky too!  My brain is in a really odd place right now so please forgive the strangeness.

*hugs for all*

3.12 Jus In Bello

Last week we had Groundhog Day, this week it's John Carpenter's Assault on Precinct 13.  If you're gonna steal, steal from the best!

I really enjoyed this episode.  It moved along at a nice clip, raised interesting thinky thoughts, came up with cool visuals, had a great solution to the monster conundrum and lots of wonderful brother dynamics.  Lots to love and squee over.

I love the sweetie/sweetheart exchanges between Bela and Dean.  *snicker*  I know, it's just me out here on the warming-to-Bela-lone-prairie.  I can handle it.  I don't need anyone else to enjoy her too.  *shrug*  I'm looking forward to learning more about Bela and what she plans to do with the Colt.  And I do like that she'll do what it takes to protect herself.  That there are characters in the Supernatural universe who make life awkward for the Winchesters is a good thing in my book.   Everyone does not need to be Sam and Dean's bestest best friend or mortal enemy.  And I don't care which brother she gets into bed with either.  Preferably both at the same time works fine for me.

Victor Henriksen rocks!  Sadly, we now have to say, rocked.   :-(  I'm bereft.  I was so looking forward to hunter Henriksen stories.  *lip quivers*  Thank goodness for fanfic where he can live again!!!!!!!  AND be both FBI protagonist or FBI mole, depending on my mood.

Hannibal Lector and his half wit little brother?  *LMAO*

Chained boys.  In a cell together.  Sharing a bunk.  *fans self*  Sam was looking very pretty this episode.  *pets*  Very touchable hair.  Very young looking again, vulnerable.  Conflicted.  *melts*  As for Dean?  He was very take chargey, had his shit together and so not a dummy when it came to the fighting evil.  Plus so awfully Dean.  *happy dance*

Henriksen:  I've got a lot to celebrate after all.  Seeing you two in chains.
Dean: You kinky sonofabitch, we don't swing that way.

We, Dean?  We?  *snicker*

Henriksen:  Take a good look at Sam.  You two will never see each other again.

Sam's reaction is priceless.  *wibble*  I love that Henriksen has nailed what'll hurt them the most.  He is (was *sniffle*) one smart cookie.  (And damn handsome too, if I might be so crass and low brow for a moment.)

It's interesting that we get all the banter between Victor and Dean.  Insults back and forth.  Sam sits and listens and reacts.  Victor even maligns their dad.  What a low blow was that?  And a great read on his part on what'll irk the brothers the most.  I love the Victor/Dean banter and all the parallels between the two characters.

Latin reciting, exorcism!Sam.  Holy Cow.  Soooooooo hot.  For the win that he's memorised some of the rites.  And about time too.  Having pages blow away in the swirling howling storm of an exorcism would be very very silly at this point.

Sam (to Nancy): Look at us, we're not the bad guys, I swear.
Dean smirks.

Now, Dean, your brother's trying to get people on your side and you're so not helping!  *lol*

When Sam grabs Nancy through the bars I startled.  Oh no, Sam don't be bad!  Thankfully, he was being smart and grabbing a crucifix for protection.  I love little 'cheats' like that.  Suggesting one thing in our brains and then making it something else, all depending on missing intel and pov.

Dean is so gleeful that the demons might have a contract out on them.  Silly boy, that's bad news, sweetie!

When Henriksen shot the sheriff that was a WOAH! moment.  I did not see that one coming.  Having him suffer possesion was certainly the quickest way to show him the truth and get him on side.  Plus using the toilet bowl was an 'ewwww...cool' moment.

Henriksen: I shot the sheriff.
Dean: But you did not shoot the deputy.
Sam's look is once again priceless.  Maybe he should be making Mastercard ads on the side?  They sure could do with some legit income.

When the demons arrive, holey molely, that was so awesome as they swarmed over the police station.

The boys have keeping-demons-out-matching-tatts!!!  How romantic.  *snicker*  OMG, yes!  It's about time.  I love fanfic which involves researching deep dark magic symbols and applying permanent marks to their skin.  So, so hot to think about them doing this together.  *sigh*

Henriksen: Can you guys beat it?  Can you win?
Dean: Honestly?  I think the world's gonna end bloody.  But it doesn't mean we shouldn't fight.  We do have choices.  I choose to go down swinging.

Which is so what they need to keep telling themselves.  Don't listen to that demon-eyed-ex-witch boys!

Ruby arrives and reintroduces tension between the brothers which adds to my suspicions of her intentions.  Ruby has a plan to save them from the demons which involves her own death and cutting the heart out of a person of virutue.  ie deliberately killing a virgin.

Dean's incredulity that any adult can be a virgin is rather sweet.

Ruby is all about 'this is the only way' but I'm a 'there's never one way to do anything' type of gal.  I'm automatically suspicious of those who say 'my way is the only way'.  *eyes Ruby suspiciously*

Ruby: I'm offering a solution.
Dean:  You're offering to kill somebody.
Ruby: And what do you think's going to happen to this girl when the demons get in?

Nancy, the person in question, agrees to be the sacrificial lamb if it'll save those she knows and loves.  I like her bravery, her example of self sacrifice, that sometimes you have to put other's before yourself.  (Are you listening SamnDean?  Sometimes you do have to make the ultimate sacrifice and let your brother go.)  Also as they play out Dean's plan, while Nancy might not be toting a gun like the guys, she does put herself in the firing line.  She's as active an agent in the battle as they are.

Henriksen: We don't sacrifice people.  We do that we're no better than them.

Yes, this is the point boys.  Listen to that smart man, guys!

We're presented with a choice between a deliberately evil act that kills one specific person versus battling to try to save everyone where the outcome is unknown but could, and does, result in the deaths of many.  A terrible choice.   Sam has clearly ended up on the fence.  He is very uncomfortable with Ruby's suggestion but he won't argue against it.  Dean is very clear and with Henriksen on this one.  You do your best and try to save every one.

Ruby:  I was going to kill myself to help you win.  I'm not going to stand here and watch you lose.

Sorry, I don't believe her.  We see Ruby leave and pass through the crowd of demon possessed people that surrounds the police station.  They so could have destroyed her if they wanted, removed a thorn from Lilith's side.  You get the opposition when you have the chance and Lilith is clearly taking no prisoners.  So this just adds to my suspiciousness.  Is she working with Lilith to corrupt Sam?  Or does she have her own agenda?  All Ruby's efforts seem aimed at making Sam forget who he is.  If he forgets his humanity won't that make him like the demons?  It may make him capable to fight, but what will he lose in the process?

Dean's plan is almost entirely successful.  *happy dance for Dean's coolarse plan*  They draw the demon's into the precinct, salt the exits and perform a mass exorcism using a recording of Sam's voice through speakers in the facility.  Unfortunately, one demon escapes the trap.

When Lilith arrives at the precinct and destroys the station and everyone in it, holy molely, that was a stunner.  I wonder about the white eyes and lip stick.  Little girls who assume the artifice of an adult women seriously freak me out.

Sam and Dean Winchester are now officially dead, which is a good and useful turn of events.

Ruby: So after your big speech about humanity and war turns out, your plan, was the one with the body count.

More and more I'm thinking that Ruby is really one of the bad guys, peeps.

For more about Lilith check out the wikipedia entry.  I must say there are a number of very interesting directions they could take this and I'm looking forward to seeing what they do.
