We caught a racoon in our backyard tonight. A racoon! Apparently, the Truax's had had a racoon in their house recently and set a trap in our backyard. It was not how I expected it to be. I was expecting a dirty, mangy creature with scars and ruffled fur. This thing was about as big as a house cat and absolutely adorable. It had such a beautiful coat. I was surprised that a few sardines were enough to lure it into the cage. I expected an animal that was a veteran of life, one that wouldn't be caught in a cage without a fight. This was no monster.
I noticed how everyone was standing around commenting on how scared he was. This creature had his back turned to us, almost spherical, with his head curved halfway around, only daring to look at us with one eye. No one moved. Not a single person! Catherine was over for a movie or something like that (I fell asleep after I got home from Hugh's earlier today), and she and my sister were naming it and making cutesy noises while the parents all just watched on talking. I couldn't stand it. Here they are, saying how frightened this poor creature is, and they keep their positions. Why do you think the animal is scared in the first place?! Animal does not mean lesser. Animals are a different part of the same universe, a different color in the living spectrum. I'm not condemning anyone, but I wished they would just take it away so it wouldn't be subject to this. It's in a cage surrounded by giants, laughing and hooting and calling at it. I'd be terrified. It's no fault of its own that it is in the cage in the first place, so don't act like it is a criminal. Even the justice system would call what had happened cruel and unusual. I damn near cried.
Just think about it next time you see something like that and realize that assumptions are never 100% sure. Never think you know something until you see it for what it really is, and maybe then you can be amazed by the greatness of life instead of how wrong you were in the first place.
