What the anti-SOPA movement means to me

Jan 18, 2012 20:27

The way the Internet reacts to almost everything has finally become powerful enough to effect meaningful change. The recent SOPA opposition is I think one of the first in a growing trend of the interconnected people speaking up for more than just themselves. And today I'm asking myself, "What's gonna happen when these generations of connected individuals are all over 40 and become the dominant voice for the whole country?"

The Boomers and those before them have officially become an anchor of the 20th century holding us back from developing higher cultural values and more compassionate laws. As the Xs Ys and Millenials begin to take the stage and as their voices create impact I think their actions will shift our cultural motivations away from the "I" and towards the "we."

Many important companies built up in the 21st century revolve around collective thought, inclusiveness, and compassionate businiess practice and they have become more valuable than the sums of their parts. Whereas businesses that grew up in the 20th century are struggling to stay relevant and in doing so through legistative means have begun to harm the very fabric of our society and its freedoms.

Suffice it to say I'm excited for the days when these modern generations firmly hold the mantle of progress on their shoulders - our shoulders, and we can shape our coutry back into one of the greatest places in the world.
