I read
this article today about some new rumors on the Apple tablet.
We've all (mostly) known about this tablet that is so hotly debated in online boards, but what I haven't really seen is any commentary on the sheer genius of the rumor itself. Imagine you're a device designer and you've got some ideas for a really innovative divice, but you're not sure how the public will receive it. So a company like Apple who uses their secrecy to many advantages leaks the rumor. Now all you have to do is sit back and watch the forums for all the functionality your new device should have. The three months of debate and wishful thinking has surely given Apple all the advice they need to produce a device that will have something for everyone.
Apple simply uses the rumormill and blogosphere as a giant petri dish for how a product will fare in the wild. It's so simple! Apple's reputation along with the spectrum of lovers and haters has generated the largest wealth of product ideas and concerns that could only be a focus group leader's wet dream.
In a lot of ways, I think the iPhone started out as a test run of the tablet.
