I'm not sure if I mentioned it before but this weekend one of my mom's old friends threw me a "handyman shower." Yes it is what you think it is. You see, the host didn't know Stephanie at all, but since I'm my mom's son, she figured she should do something for me. Stephanie had her own shower back in July, so mine was a month later. I was asked what kinds of tools I needed/wanted and I even registered for a bunch of stuff at Sears.
Having heard what kinds of things happen at bridal showers I have to admit I was slightly aprehensive and nervous about what kind of embarrassment might be dealt to me. Luckliy I didn't have to do much but handle an invisible deck of cards for a magic trick. Although my mom did give me a pair of silk "I Love You" heart boxers which got held up for everyone. But all in all it was a really nice time. All the groomsmen made it, and we all had good conversation over dinner. The food was really good: burgers and dogs, with schips and homemade salsa con queso and some yummy cheesy potato thing. They also made rockin' lemon bars for dessert, along with big cupcakes.
I got a TON of usefull stuff, and really filled out my tool collection quite nicely. I received over $200 in gift cards, which will go towards some stuff I didn't get. Now I don't mean to complain, but Stephanie got a good number of rather pricey things off our registry for her shower, but I ended up with a lot of generic stuff in contrast to the quality tools I registered for. Like, instead of getting somthing made by Milwaukee, I got something comparable from a company I've never heard of, in a massive box set that likely came from Target or Walmart. My parents however, went out and got me a very nice DeWalt circular saw.
And, I also learned that almost all the tools I registered for on the Sears site, were only sold online. I was told Milwaukee tools are top grade, but of course they're not sold IN Sears, just Sears online. Bastards! So when folks went to the store they had to get what was closest. Nonetheless, wrenches are pretty standard (hehe) and the ones I got will be fine.
I plan on getting a quality drill though. You can't sacrifice quality in a driver/drill. It's the one tool I'm bound to use the most and I want it to work for everything I end up doing. Now I can build my fence!
So it seems like they started a new kind of tradition in the fam. I'm sure the next guy to get married, even if he's a suitor of one of the girls, will get a "man shower."
The bachelor party is this coming weekend and loks to be some kid of crazy crazy good time. I know there won't be any strippers, we're not that kinda group, but I'm told there will be bowling and drinking, possibly fishing, and camping and fires, and, pretty much anything else we wanna do. I'm excited!
