I was up extra early this morning, so of course a cloud of thoughts form over my head. Words like trending, meme, socially connected, invite, post, all of them floating around while I watched YouTube videos of upcoming hip-hop artists.

Funny as it is, I don't really follow hip-hop, we have an old on and off again relationship. I digress, this group has been getting a lot attention, because they are trending. For good reason, stuffs pretty funny. Trending things become a part of our perception and that becomes the construct upon which we build other ideas. Now thing is a friend told me about this band, I wasn't linked by youtube's automated devil evil mind reader computer hacker program. Then it occurred to me, new ideas don't come to me from friends nearly as often as they do from a datastream feed like twitter, youtube, or facebook even if "friends" are at the other end of that.
What is that? Do you hear my voice when I send you "check this out" on facebook, or does your brain treat it like spam? We are constantly scouring for relevant information to fill a hole that is empty EVERY 5 MINUTES. What is that?
But do you really need it?
What is Facebook really? What did they set out to do? Does it matter? All I know is I'm worn out with it, I could literally sleep to the sound of their falling stocks. I'm so tired of facebook and it's contribution of irrelevance. "OH Molly went to the store!" Wow, that is just great Molly let us know that. Molly must be pretty important if 1400 people know she just went to the store, does that make it relevant? No, so when everyone is important no one is, it's like crying wolf with fame. >_> Also, Molly doesn't actually have 1400 real friends, that's fake, I hate fake things... -_-
It's like a train wreck though, you can't look away because deep down you pine for something relevant to happen somewhere. If you know you feel in touch and that makes you feel grounded and in control. Me on the other hand my FAITH grounds me, this just makes me feel like I'm treading water.
OH LOOK, pictures of the inside of your uterus! I couldn't be less happy you're having a child frankly, not trying to be non-christian about it but did I ask you for this information? We are hardly on speaking terms even! Not even 5 years ago I couldn't fathom seeing this picture in a public forum, you wouldn't have gone out of your way to talk to me over coffee let alone sneak this picture out of your purse during that time. Good catching up, I feel like I know you.
I begin to wonder what this does as far as progressing trends? Like a self sustained unlimited energy source, the internet drives and spreads ideas that feed change at the moment it was first conceived. The output goes in the input, it's like watching feedback of human consciousness at 11 volume. Good or bad, it's public domain and query without digging through the trash (sometimes it feels like it though), a day you don't have to spend reading in the library.
"And?"
What I do know is this is what we look like now.
Like an addict we'll rationalize this into a need, putting it AUTOMATICALLY in front of all other priorities. In fact, it's not even a priority it's second nature now. I'm all for technology being second nature, I'm furious we haven't colonized the moon but the above not a GOOD example of second nature and that's why we don't live on the moon (spite the lack of a good atmosphere and our current recession, which for this post's sake I'll also blame on facebook for fun sake.)
So say I told my great grandfather that in the future that he would be so interested in what Molly was doing that he couldn't even be bothered to walk straight, work for more than 30 minutes uninterrupted, drive his carriage, or just sit in a dark room with a cup of scotch enjoying music. That man would shoot himself in the face! I'm not kidding, he had a handlebar mustache and he was an Irish lumberjack, dude didn't mess around.
This generation of children? What a mess this will be... We complain about our privacy and yet we share everything. we live in a dynamically evolving model showing how a multifaceted multilayered hippocracy can become the trend machine over logic, reason, faith, and measured needs. When we click like for objects of our desires, respond/comment which elevates posts of interest, we are creating marked results for trend analysis algorithms that in turn drive industry (not life) relevant changes to things in our economy, jobs, lives, speech patterns, what we find socially acceptable norms, what humor is, and what is "important" that day. We build our world with buttons...
Just because you like "coca-cola" doesn't make that a fresh idea, but your rewarded with a new network of people to look at. Congratulations, you've just been corralled, calculated, and categorized here's your brand.
"So? What's the problem Neil?"
My problem is that in 5-6 short years we have all been programmed into this loop. I mean all of us. So much so, people in parent's generation have adopted socio-internet norms. Like being insulted about your digital participation in something... ::event invitation titled "Hang Out? Y/N/M":: "You didn't respond to my invitation!?" When did we adopt such a rediculous method of organizing ourselves? It comes installed on phones! It's long term use has lead to coding and browser development changes on a million dollar level to add longevity to what used to be an application that would crash if you left it open.
If the "idea" (social networking) of facebook can be it's identity and how we use it is the veil it hides behind, you still can't ignore the effects outside of it. It's right there... That's why I logged into livejournal and I made this post on here instead.
So I'm going to fast.
In my faith I feel like I'm being knocked off my walk. Today is a new day and age so I'm going to fast in today's terms as an experiment. SO for 40 days, no facebook PERIOD. I don't care, your business is none of my business, my business is none of your business. Just facebook though, I want to isolate the effects of what happens to just the lack of facebook itself. Some may take this as me not being interested in what they are doing. I will ask this of you? Why do you, need me to be interested? Are you a tv show? Do you need input? No really, put down your digital identity and let's talk about it over coffee...
PS: This is what I'm talking about... Joke or not.
