a L&O:CI fic

ar
I finally decided to post it, are you happy
gusthemoose? *grin*

Anyhow, I was having the hardest time trying to figure out what to write, then a plotbunny, an episode of CI, and a fic I was reminded of slapped me upside the head. The result is this.
In case you're wondering which fic got me going, here's the quote I was thinking of. I'm not sure yet, but maybe I'll try writing drabbles for the other parts?

"V. Thou shalt eventually write a postep for "In the Wee Small Hours" -From 'The Ten Commandments of CI Fanfiction'  by piecesofflair. Seriously, if you haven't read it, you're missing out on a gut-bustingly funny humor fic. Go on, go read it *shoos*

And then once you've sufficiently recovered from laughing yourself into a coma, you might be able to read my story..

Title: Okay
Fandom: L&O:CI
Pairing: Bobby/Alex
Spoilers: Season five, "In The Wee Small Hours", and "Scared Crazy."
A/N- yeah, I think the last sentence is lame too, but I couldn't think up anything else.

Time waits for no man. Or woman.

It's ultimately the reason she's standing here right now.

She knows they should get going but she can't seem to make herself move just yet. Everything's felt a little weird since the trial, like the world shifted just a little bit and now she's trying to regain her balance. Rubbing her arms for warmth against the cold wind, she vaguely recognizes that winter is upon them, but that's as far as she strays from her thoughts. She just wishes there was a way to go back and change things. She would slap that younger, stupider version of herself, the one that even entertained the thought of trying to leave him.

"Alex!" Snapping back to the present she becomes aware that Bobby has his hand on her arm, a slightly worried expression on his face, and that he called her Alex for once. 'Where'd that come from?'

"Sorry, I zoned out a bit. I know- that's your thing." Shaking herself back to reality, she offers a wry smile while carefully reconstructing the professional persona she allowed to slip away moments ago... She lingers, watching the world passing by on the street below for another second or two, then turns back so they can get going. Time is moving past them, and like a thief, it changes its plans for no one.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Later on, while they're going through Robbie Boatman's office, he brings her a coffee. Between milling around the room looking for answers and asking Robbie's boss questions, he'd taken the time to make her coffee. Exactly the way she usually took it, too- half a creamer and a packet of sugar.

"Thanks."

She sounds almost surprised, though she couldn't explain why if she tried, after all, it's not the first time he's brought her coffee. It might not mean much to someone else, but for them it's an olive branch- his way of saying they're going to be okay.

-------------------------------------------------------------

When Carver starts to attack Bobby's methods a short time later, albeit in a subtle manner, she's the first one to jump to his defense with an impassioned argument, lashing out against what she mentally describes as a load of crap. It doesn't matter that Carver's an Assistant D.A. who could make her life hell if he wanted to, and that he's standing right next to Deakins who could make life equally miserable. She's already failed Bobby once, she's not looking to experience that feeling again.

As soon as they get away from Carver and Deakins, she senses him turning to face her as they walk into an empty office. He doesn't say anything, just quirks an eyebrow in a silent question. 'What's going on?'

Maybe she was a tiny bit intense back there, but she's still amazed that he has to ask. But just because she seems to be a blind spot for him, and he for her, she'll spell it out.

"I couldn't let you down again."

He's already starting to say that she hasn't let him down, but she doesn't wait to hear any of that, waving him off and taking a second to figure out what needs to be said. With her head cocked to the side like that, she looks like a shorter, more elegant imitation of her partner.

"I'm your partner, that means it's my job to back you up. But you're also my friend, that means I'm backing you up regardless of the job. Let me, okay?"

It came out in a jumble of rushed words that says she's been thinking about them a lot during the past few days. It's shown in small ways, like the way she's seemed a bit more tired lately, or the uncertain shifting of her feet now, but she's resolute. They're talking about more than what happened a few minutes ago, and they imperceptibly shift into their own form of communication, silently discussing the recent past, the present, and the future. She gets the feeling things are going to work out after all.

Another second, and he smiles, a single word putting things right.

"Okay."

He was and they were.
