The electoral college is a contemporary issue that, within time, people will come to regard as a historical error. “The people” in effect do not have the ability to choose their own president. During the George W. Bush election, he did not receive the majority of votes, however still became the US president. Instances such as these are also prevalent in the Kennedy and Nixon elections. Under this system, voters do not necessarily vote for their president, but for a slate of electors. The electoral college is unfair to voters, as candidates only focus attention to bigger states in order to gain more electoral votes. If history is the “light of truth” and shows us our errors, then hopefully, it will show the United States, a “democratic” nation, the error of a non-democratic institution that only fosters discontent, as seen in previous elections.
All citizens are given the right to pursue liberty. Futures do not have to be binding. Thomas Paine’s Common Sense spoke to America during a time of epic fear and hesitation, 176 days before the Declaration of Independence. He gave the belief that power should come from the people, and that message is still a paramount to students today.
