I should start out by saying that, first and foremost, I don't have anyone in particular in mind in this little rant. I spend a lot of time on a mommy website and have, in turn, read a lot of threads on the baby name advice/suggestions.
I am a polite person, so I'm taking my time here to rant about it instead of going ballistic on people over there.
Thus let me begin "Lynzee's Naming Pet Peeves"
"Creative" spellings. I don't dislike all deviations from standard spellings, I mean, look at my name. However, there are some the bug the hell out of me. They fall into two categories: word names and the letter Y.
For word names, maybe it's the writer in me, but if you name your kid a word please spell it correctly. Otherwise the kid is going through their life with a huge fucking typo as a name. Do you want to name your kid Justice, then please don't spell it "Justiss" or something. It looks like some kind of 3rd grade spelling test mistake. Forever. Someone suggested the name Meryt and it made me rage inside. The word is spelled MERIT, it's not more "name-y" because you stuck a Y in it!
Speaking of the letter Y, when did it become the creative throw-away letter? Why does it suddenly make a name more feminine as well? I see names like "Camdyn, Rowyn, Jordyn" blah blah blah. I think half the time it looks stupid stuck in for some random letter.
Parents naming kids after their personal hobbies. Seems like a huge personal ego stroke. You name your PETS after your hobbies. Some girl got on and wanted to name her potential child after weird names from Lord of the Rings or her Star Wars RPG character. I wanted to bite her face off. It's like naming your kid Han Solo because ZOMG I LOVE STAR WARS. My husband loves Star Wars, and yet we don't feel the need to torture another human being for the rest of his life by making him a walking representation of our hobbies.
It's one thing to like a character in a book and give your child that name. It's another when it's an outrageous fantasy name that could only possibly associated with said book character. Like naming your kid friggin Bilbo. Or with the current trend: Bylbou
