Author's Note: This was written in like, fifteen minutes last night for
silver-lined because she is OBSESSED with making my boys all AU-ified. I hope this didn't disappoint, but I actually liked it, so whatever. XD;
Aiba, by nature, was a very determined person.
Aiba, with his hair changing as often as MatsuJun's mood and what he lacked in grace he made up in pure enthusiasm and assertiveness, was somewhat of a delicate being, always caught up in his own little world but rather than being secretive and dazed, Aiba's mind managed to entwine the two realities into one and because of that, they were all left with disastrous results and an inexplicable urge to protect Aiba's naivete.
It was why Sho, though he adored the kid, hated being Aiba's potions partner.
He had to be grateful; it was their fifth year and it would be their last year of mandatory Potions lessons and never would he have to try and think of some quick excuse as to why their potion was turning pink when everyone else's was turning dark blue or why all the acromantula venom suddenly disappeared and, subsequently, why Aiba's cheeks were puffing out and turning a nasty green-yellow color and Aiba defended himself by saying that he thought it looked like caramel. Afterwards, Nino had called him an idiot on the way to the hospital wing because there's no way you could get the impression that venom could be sweet and not dangerous and Aiba's cheerful face, made hysterically comical by his cheeks puffed out to an outrageous size, made them all forget the admonishment.
Fifth year, though it was their last year, was the one Sho worried about the most because Aiba wanted to get a good mark on his Potions OWL. Perhaps he wouldn't have worried so much for the other boy if he had simply needed to do well but Aiba wanted to and whatever Aiba wanted, he got, even if it meant going to extremes.
Like right now, roaming the Forbidden Forest to find catepillars in the middle of the night. Sho told him that there were sliced catepillars in the Potions stock closet and, if he wanted, he could convince Nino to mosey over and fetch some but Aiba shrugged him off as he tossed a spotty self-charmed Invisibility Blanket over the two of them.
"Those are normal sized." Aiba said as they began their trek down the grounds.
"But they're okay for the shrinking potion. We used them in class." Sho treaded lightly, afraid that if his steps came too hard, everyone in the castle could hear them.
"Not if we want to shrink really big things. Like an elephant." Aiba argued. The bewilderment hung in the air between them but Aiba didn't notice it and barreled right on. "I want to see if...like, if we find really big catapillars and toss in double the amount of all the other stuff, can we shrink really, really big things."
"...like an elephant." Sho said, a little skeptical. Aiba nodded vigorously.
"I wanted to try it on a dragon, but we don't have any dragons here, so..." Aiba sounded quite forlorn at this and Sho decided that it was probably best if they just go along with Aiba's plan now, lest they find themselves trying to find an acromantula in the forest and thus, being eaten alive. 'Sakurai Sho, last of the great Wizarding family, devoured by giant acromantula. Details within!' would make an interesting headline across the Daily Prophet but, regrettably, Sho didn't want to die.
"Sho-chan, what is this?" Aiba's voice cut into his thoughts and he peered at the leaves of a plant, interested in its shape. Aiba tore a piece off and opened his mouth to eat it when something clicked in Sho's mind and he cried out, reaching out, dropping the blanket, to try to stop Aiba but it was too late. Aiba chewed thoughtfully.
"Aiba, no!"
Fifteen minutes later, Sho carried a babbling and panicking Aiba on his back to the hospital wing, where they both received detention from the nurse for breaking curfew and being so dimwitted as to eat alihotsy leaves.
A few days later, he mentioned that he wanted to go back to the Forest and continue their search. Sho could only blink in disbelief and say no, sorry, he was busy that night and he should ask MatsuJun to go with him instead. Aiba nodded and flounced away in a flurry of recently fluffed hair, Sho went back to his lunch and that was that.
So why was he crouched underneath Aiba's Invisibility Blanket again with MatsuJun clinging to his arm and Aiba's loud voice betraying where they were to begin with?
