I packed a complete kit for an overnight trip, in a hypothetical locale that was fairly warm and dry:

Clearly, this being a school night in early March, I can't field-test the thing, but I did discover that this packing method is only reasonable with an extremely light load (think a change of clothes and some snacks).
The Hudson's Bay pack was prone to sliding and shifting, and was pretty painful, even with the bandanna wrapped around the shoulder strap. Further, it's pretty clear that unless you wrapped the whole thing in bungee cords, it would work itself loose after a mile or two of hiking. Finally, everything inside - including, I realized, my first aid and snakebite kits - required several minutes of fiddling with knots to access.
Ah, well. Can't win 'em all, right?
