I hate the assumption that if I'm knitting or drawing or otherwise occupying my hands during something else, I'm not paying attention and being disrespectful. Umm... No. I actually pay better attention if I have something to do than if I'm just sitting there listening without it being a situation in which I can jump in and talk myself. NOT allowing me to do anything is a good way to get me to start daydreaming, or worse, fall asleep. Yes, even if something is interesting. This is especially true when I'm running on three hours of sleep. Also - I've gotten to law school doing things as I do them, so you would figure that people could give me the dignity to sink or swim on my own terms rather than imposing some high school-esque rules of How Things Are Done on me.
...Oh look, telling me I couldn't knit has made me use the Internet instead, which is actually more distracting for me. Nothing is actually happening right now, but still, I have been lead to believe that most people would rather have me knitting than screwing around on my iPhone. And really, this is the only thing keeping me alert and awake at this point.
How the hell do normal people just sit there and do nothing? Especially at 9:30 in the morning?
