I Used To Be A Teacher

Fraser’s second idea, calling his fellow teachers and asking them to bring their classes over to share their ideas, started out promisingly enough.

“Miss Becky let us make musical instruments!” Pushing Up Roses explained while shaking her paper-plate tambourine. Together with Paw on the oatmeal container drum, the Rap Critic on a paper-towel-roll horn, and Todd in the Shadows striking glasses of water with a spoon, the quartet performed an impromptu song for the others.

“Mr. Kyle showed us how to make picture books,” Linkara proudly explained while holding up his collection of construction paper relating a tale of superheroes fighting villains. Marzgurl’s story was about talking animals, CR drew an original fairy tale, and JesuOtaku displayed her ghost adventure.

“Mr. Deacon let us make a movie!” Film Brain revealed with an excited squeak. “Me and Nostalgia Chick were explorers who sailed all over the world and found the cave of Cinema Snob and Phelous, who were trolls guarding the treasure!” He paused then to hug Deacon’s legs. “Mr. Deacon is the greatest teacher ever!” Deacon patted the young Brit on the head and couldn’t help smiling as he noticed the scowl now covering Fraser’s face.

“So, what did your class make?” Becky asked innocently. Fraser’s eyes darted to the clumps of glue, glitter, and paint covering everything in his classroom before his scowl deepened.

“Ok, I have a new idea,” he announced suddenly as he headed for the door. “We’re all going outside for Field Day!” The children cheered at the suggestion and ran out to the playground while the other teachers approached Fraser in concern.

“Are you sure about this?” Kyle wondered. “Shouldn’t we have more chaperones or something?”

“Yeah, and we don’t have any activities prepared,” Becky added.

“We’ll be fine,” Fraser brushed off their concerns. “Besides, these kids need some exercise now and then.”

“I just don’t think-” Deacon started to say

“Well, maybe that’s a problem you should work on,” Fraser snapped before heading out after his pupils.

A little while later, Fraser had the classes divided into teams and lined up on opposite sides of the school’s back lawn.

“Ok, this is going to be a tag race,” Fraser explained to the kids. “After I say go, Insano, Linkara, Todd, and Cinema Snob will all run to the opposite side of the field and tag their teammates. Then those teammates will run back across the field and tag another teammate. This will continue until everyone has run. The team who finishes fastest will win. Any questions?”

“I hate running,” Cinema Snob pouted as he crossed his arms.

“I don’t want to run against this big baby!” Insano shouted while pointing at Linkara.

“You’re a baby!” Linkara shouted back, which led to a shoving match between the two.

“I’m cold,” Todd said, pulling the hood even more tightly over his face.

“Maybe we should call this off,” Deacon muttered to Fraser. He glowered at the man in response and adjusted his cap.

“Ok, when I count to three, run. Ready? 1…2…3!” Linkara and Insano set off at once, while Todd followed after at a less strenuous pace. Cinema Snob grumbled and stomped off behind the others.

“I’ll bet you ten bucks my class beats all of yours,” Fraser challenged the others.

“Dude, we can’t bet on the kids,” Kyle replied.

“Chicken.” Just then Linkara tripped over a rock and slammed into the ground.

“Oh crap!” Becky raced over to her student and helped lift him to his feet.

“Don’t shake the baby!” Insano called with a cackle. “He’ll probably barf on you!”

“I’m not a baby!” Linkara barely managed to blink back tears as he pressed his hands against skinned knees, which made Insano laugh even harder.

“Leave him alone!” Spoony screamed before lunging at Insano. The two rolled around on the ground for a moment, Sage, Ask That Guy, Chick, and Critic cheering them on, before Fraser and Kyle pulled them apart.

“No more fighting or I’ll call all of your parents!” Fraser demanded, still trying to keep his grip on the struggling Insano.

“Mr. Deacon, can we make a movie too?” Deacon smiled at the Critic and the other children who had suddenly gathered around him.

“Sure. Let’s just go back inside and make sure Linkara’s okay before we start.”

“Ok!” Everyone followed after the dark-haired man, including Insano, who had wriggled free of Fraser’s grip, and left the hat-wearing teacher alone on the playground.
