okay, so last night a small portion of the 240 car club went up to Canyon Lake. Because I was the bravest of the group, I was the one that rode with Dave on the way up what I assume is called Canyon Lake Road. weeee. So, the 4-point harness didn't make sense at first, but once we hit the first turn, it all came flying together.
Okay, so we dick around at Dave's house for a few hours looking at big-boys.com (not porn). So then we depart, go to the mall to meet one of Andrew's work buddies, then go to mobile for gas (internal combustion engines don't do so well without it), and then to chevron (on 60 and Idaho) to meet chad. So once our group was fully assembled, we mounted up (and I strapped in (took me a while too)) and headed off for the 88.
We pass the Lost Dutchman park and I realized that I had been there twice before; once by air, once by argosy. So a lil while up there, it starts getting windey and hilly. And does Dave slow? Nah, he downshifts and punches it. Weeee! So after a short time we catch up to Andrew, Carly, and Sara (in Andrew's 240) and pass them (they requested to be last on the road b/c they didn't wanna go flying off a cliff or get in anyones way. Then we start flyin up the street and we pass Andrew's work buddy and his friend (names unknown, they will be thing1 and thing2) and they pull off to the side right away, because they don't want to become a hood ornament. Nice of them.
After more winding and turning and up the side of the mountain, we catch up to chad and jessica. Okay, now I'm not sure how comfortable jess was with drifting up a curvey mountain road, but seems like chad was having fun. But he had to be a dick about it, and wouldn't let us pass without a fight. Okay, if you've ever heard Dave's and Chad's nissans, you'd know that chad didn't have a fighting chance, but he just had to test his new suspension and anti-sway bar... So we pass him and after a few minutes the road got very downhill, and Dave slowed way down. Why, you ask? Well, didn't you smell that ass-nasty smell? You didn't? Well, that smell was his brakes. And since he didn't want to warp the rotors, he just took it slow the rest of the way, and when we got to Tortilla flat, we stopped to wait for things 1&2 to catch up, and for Andrew to...get to the lake... And we inspected the depth of the tortilla river (which partially overtook the road) and we waited for the brakes to cool down (so they didn't warp from driving through the very cold water). La de da de de, everyone assembles and we have this nice little ...party thing. No beer or anything, just talkin.
Approximately an hour or so elapses and then we decide to take a picture of the 3 240's and the random gti that came with us (thing1's car). So andrew "subtley" moved his car closer to the front of tortilla flat (so you could see the sign there) and then chad followed. Okay now this asshole decides he would like to drift the WHOLE way the 60 feet over to the pic spot. So the GTI follows, and does the same. And Dave, in the meanest, most abused nissan in the history of the world, just kinda puts along and pulls up nice and slowlike. And then the shooting begins. Weee:) T'was either a cap gun or a 22; the hilly, rocky geography kinda prevented any of us from really idientifying it, so we're just going to say capgun, because if we were really being shot at, I would not be happy.
All right, so once we identify that hey, there are people that live here and they're the gun-toting-streetracer-unfriendly type, and we humans hadn't bullet-proofed ourselves, we decided it best to leave (or rather, go on the other side of a nice big hill so he couldn't get a clear line of sight. And that we did. We just found some other spot to park, and that's when they wanted me to take the picture. Okay so they park right in front of a street light, and this is bad because it's therefore backlit. Oops? So, I take some pix anyway, and thing1 said, "hey, where'd you learn to take pictures, backlights-r-us?" to which I repied, "hey, you were the first asshole to park." [not being mean, I just hadn't used the word "asshole" in a while]. And since the rest of the group have been goin OCD on me and were repeatedly parking so they all line up n stuff I wasn't gonna tell them to do it over. So I went to the other side of the line of cars (so I basically took profile shots of the car, of which Andrew's was the only one really visible).
And then Andrew started getting weird. He was jumping like a fairy between the cars (I got a few of his fairy jumps on ..film?) and then did some tuck n roll thing off the hood of his car. Weird. Okay, so yeah, I got the pix and they kinda turned out. They'd have been a lot better if I had just turned off the street light (which is easily achieved, for those of you that don't know, by giving it a good firm flying side kick to the base) but I didnt want to risk getting shot at again :) The night ended shortly thereafter. All because wimpy chad had to be at work in 5 hours. Bah. I get off work here and have to be back in 5 hours, and there's no miniholiday to the lake involved!!
Right, so on the way down, I get some video of people departing, and then... So I got the camera out and i am seemingly just pointing it at the road, when in fact I'm videotaping our descent hoping to get some good exhaust audio and what does dave say but, "you takin pictures of the road too?" "actually, I'm taking video" (I forgot to let go of the record button, so we got my squeaky michael jackson voice on the drift video.... DAMN! So, my camera says it has like 45 seconds of video left, so I tell dave, "just let me know when a good part's comin up" And he does, and I record for 45 seconds. And then, my camera says I have 1:00 minutes of space left... okay, so I record for another 32 seconds or so, and then I have 55 seconds left. I wonder if my camera actually knows how much space it has? Anyhow, I got some pretty good video and excellent audio of dave's car roaring, and screaching, and his poor exhaust pipe getting flattened on a right-hand turn. Teehee. That poor exhaust cap... it's dead now :( There will be a funeral on April 2nd, if anyone's interested...
That should just about wrap up the evening. If there's anything you feel I left out, let me know, I'll ammend the entry.
and that was what I can remember of my night.
