Appearance: Kairi is a blue-eyed redhead with an easy smile that even years of combat training couldn't erase, and she seems to almost always be brimming with good-natured laughter. While both Riku and Sora grew tall and built for war, Kairi never quite made it past 5'5" and a little extra. She's streamlined with the muscles of a runner, and her hands are well-taken care of, as a healer is useless without them. There's scars on her knuckles and wrists from a few training accidents (and one or more goof-ups with a dropped knife or fumbled scalpel), but most are faint and years old. Even as a trained medic, Kairi is not without her girlish streaks, and she isn't embarrassed to show it. She's fond of pinks and lavenders, and it reflects in most of her outfits, which are usually tank tops, hoodies, and skirts. She also has a pair of lucky pink sneakers that she wears almost all the time, and is very partial to cute star designs or flowers. A girl has to be in touch with her inner princess, you know?

Personality: Kairi is the thread that ties Riku and Sora together, the balance of the soft glow of dawn to the pitch of night and the blinding light of midday. When the boys got into scuffles, Kairi was the one to sort them out, and she practically has the patience of a saint. Easy going and relaxed, it takes a lot to get Kairi upset, as she's an optimistic at heart and enjoys cheering up others. But the rose is never without its thorns, and if pushed, Kairi will step up to defend that she believes in. Medics see things that would make many people have nightmares, and Kairi has sworn to take her duties seriously, in an effort to save as many people as she can. A princess of flowers and lace with the spine of steel, it's her faith in her friends that buoys her in times of trouble. She's gentle but determined, and there's a hidden mischievous streak that shows sometimes when she smiles. It lights up her eyes and her dimples show more than usual, and if she's plotting something particularly fiendish, she'll cock her head ever so slightly to her left. Sora and Riku have learned that this usually means trouble. Although whether trouble for them or other people is often hard to determine, and sometimes intermingled.

Physical Strengths: Kairi is exceptionally fast on her feet. Not as swift as Riku or Sora, but she can keep up with them if pushed to a dead run. She's honed her reflexes and can snatch a thrown knife out of the air, and bolt if targeted by a Heartless. Her manual dexterity is highly refined, and her overall flexibility is nothing to scoff at. Kairi's found herself in sticky situations more often than not, and has had to literally escape via a tight squeeze. She's not exactly a contortionist, but she is a specialist at escaping when necessary. She also has a wicked throwing arm, and has taught herself to be ambidextrous when working with her knives. Her aim isn't perfect, but never make bets on her marksmanship, more often than not you'll be finding yourself on the losing end.

Psychological Strengths: Kairi has an unfaltering trust in her friends and their abilities. She's excellent at gauging someone's true selves, and honestly believes in the greater good of all people. Determined to do what's right and support those around her, she's a nearly unshakable foundation in her circle of friends. An excellent mediator, Kairi approaches life with a smile and the knowledge that no matter how bad things are, they'll get better. To her, the good things are always right around the corner, and her quiet (relatively as compared to Sora's) optimism is quite often infectious.

Physical Weaknesses: Kairi is not a machine, and her stamina isn't the greatest. While she's an excellent runner, she's not a triathelete, and is at her peak performance over short distances. She cannot work for days on end without rest, as it hampers her fine-motor skills and that can make all the difference when doing trauma care on the field. She's also not that strong, and is still on the last vestiges of her growth spurts, which leaves her metabolism a little out of whack and her joints prone to aches. She will also stumble on a run if she's not careful, she's still getting used to the length of her legs. Just don't point out when she trips, it's embarrassing.

Psychological Weaknesses: While her faith in Sora and Riku is one of her greatest strengths, the boys can also be used against her. Threat of harm to them immediately puts her on the defensive, as they are her only family left. She's also a little naive, still transitioning from the fanciful daydreams of a young girl to the inner visionary of a young woman. This leaves her open to confusion and mental stumbles if she feels unsure about herself or others. She's also deeply wounded if someone betrays her trust, and is more likely to become disappointed than angry.

History: Kairi's memories of her childhood home are full of high vaulted ceilings and the smell of old books. Stained glass windows and ancient wooden chairs that were so big her feet barely hung over the seat. Her grandmother reading to her, Kairi nestled in her lap and staring raptly at the colorful illustrations on the pages before her, the stories her grandmother told coming to life in her mind. Knights in shining armor defeating foes against all odds, perilous journeys and happy endings. Princesses in fantastical gowns with enchanting powers who saved the knights when the knights were on the brink of destruction. And an old, old legend that when the darkness would be at its blackest, a hero would emerge and take up his blade, bringing light back into the world. These tales were firmly ingrained in Kairi's mind at a young age, her grandmother instilling upon her the wisdoms and old wives tales, everything up to and including proper table manners and how to enjoy the simple things life offered. Childhood was a safe time for her, happy, pleasant, full of wonder and discovery both inside the library and in the great outdoors that was the back garden with its creeper vines and dew-dusted roses bigger than Kairi's hands.

Kairi doesn't remember how she escaped the sudden swarm of Heartless, only that she was found sitting on a curb, clutching a star-shaped charm tightly in one hand. It had been a present from her mother and grandmother, and it's all she has left of them. Not that Kairi minds, after being raised in Template's defense camps, she's found new friends and people that are precious enough to be family in spirit if not in blood. She excelled in her studies, although she did much better in her book learning than in her combat training, and her first few brushes with the medical field grossed her out a little, but she's come a long way since then.

The two most special people that Kairi found during her earliest days in the camp were Riku and Sora. Sora was always trying to be just like Riku, and Riku...was being Riku, and was obviously too cool for the younger kids. Kairi immediately took a shine to both of them, and it wasn't long before the three were practically inseparable. It didn't hurt that they were soon assigned as a three-man cell, a flawless team who even when bickering amongst themselves (or rather between Riku and Sora), it only made them stronger. Riku who could hit the enemy and run, only to double back and strike before the foe had time to react. Sora who could pull someone out of danger and could either heal until Kairi arrived or cover Riku's back. Kairi, while not defenseless, was the healer, and more than once she pulled Riku and Sora out of trouble.

But there are some days where even the luckiest find their luck running out. On their way to a conflict zone, they were ambushed, with Riku leaping into the fray, and Kairi looking on in horror as Sora locked up and Riku being overwhelmed. She vaguely remembers screaming as Riku went down, then there was a flash of light as Sora howled a battle cry, a blade suddenly in his hands as he'd launched himself at the horde and tore through them like they were tissue paper. Kairi made it to Riku's side and pulled him out of danger on reflex alone, but by the time she was thinking clearly, Sora was unconscious and all of the Heartless were gone.

She was shaking when her team was found, both boys clutched tightly to her sides as she shivered uncontrollably from the shock. It took a lot of time and tea before Kairi calmed down enough to make any sense when she talked, and wouldn't sleep until she was sure that both of the boys were safe and were going to be okay.

As she sat by their bunks, wrapped in a blanket with a mug of tea in her hands, she found herself thinking of high vaulted ceilings, dew-kissed roses bigger than her outstretched hands, and the old, dusty smell of books. It was in that moment that she knew, without a doubt, that no matter what happened, things would be okay. There really were knights in shining armor, and if the legends were true, they were going to need a princess to back them up and make sure they were put back together again.

So she smiled, her feet resting on the bunk frames, and waited for the sleeping princes to wake up. They would have a lot of work to do now, if Sora was going to become a proper hero.

Several years later and everyone's grown, Sora becoming more accustomed to his newfound role, and Kairi becoming one of the better healers in Template through her determination to keep up with Sora and Riku. They are inseparable, Kairi and her two dashing knights, as she keeps them in one piece when their attempts to save the world turn out to be more than they can handle. And no matter what happened, Kairi would follow them anywhere, if only to make sure she could bring them home again. Preferably in one piece.
