Before I installed my current copy of XP, I left a bit of un-formatted and un-partitioned space for extra special project I had in mind. While recently reading a new book "Rebel Code and the Open Source Revolution", I felt compelled to try out Linux. I know there's been various versions, but I've picked the most current and popular version: Ubuntu. I thought about Fedora, but maybe I'll try that another day.
Now, I have tried previously to install it, but it was such a bitch since instead of a dos prompt its a linux terminal. That and I had no idea how to install it. It kept asking stuff about "dev3" and root file and unless you know anything about a file tree (which I did to an extent) and the linux make up, you're screwed.
But, I finally mustered enough nerve and focus to install it. I hate to jump on the nerdy linux band wagon, but it's fucking cool. Once you get the hang of it, the whole OS is much more, at least to me, user friendly and fun. And for the first time of years of pirating or getting pwned by microsoft, I can feel the freedom of using an OS without restrictions or limitation. I feel so young. I can relax about SP1, 2,3,and 4. Fuck'em. I don't need that shit. The only reason I am keeping windows around is to record music, but I think I could probably find the right drivers for linux or somehow port them there.
But seriously, go ahead and download it. And step out of the OS closet and you'll be enjoying life so much more. All your application are free and available. All the documents can be ported for mac or pc anyway. The visual effects are fantastic and you can add anything you want to make your version. It's so sweet. And if you're considering programming, then you can practice on your own OS. It's sweet. Unlike Microsoft.
I don't recommend replacing windows, but if your smart enough to know the name then you should be smart enough to do a dual boot.
I'm excited. Can't wait to go home and play with it some more.
