[fic post] If You Never Fight, You'll Never Win

Jan 29, 2009 18:36

So yeah. Been missing in action since Monday. Somehow I caught strep throat, so I didn't want to eat/drink anything 'cause my throat hurt so bad, I couldn't sleep for two days, and I nearly collapsed each time I tried to get out of bed. Turns out I was severely dehydrated, which means I now have to carry water with me everywhere. If my friend hadn' ( Read more... )

First, I just want you to know how much your comments (on all three of my ouran fics, both here and on FF.net) have made, not only my day, but my week. Particularly after the awful time I had last week, seeing such detailed reviews made me feel fantastic. Thank you. C:

As for the last line, I realize that I have a tendency to make unnecessarily complex sentences that sometimes need a reread or two to be certain you know what you're reading. I'm working on it, I swear, lol. "Watch" shouldn't be changed to "watches," because it's in the same tense as the first clause (forgive me if I'm using the term correctly; it's been years since I last used grammar terms, which is a little sad, lol). To clarify, here's what I meant:

"But he still has to fight to ignore the coppery taste in his mouth and watch her back as she walks away."

If I took out the "unclenches his jaw, releasing his tongue", detail, that's how it would read. I hope that made it clearer. >w<

I'm pretty sure Kyouya is the ensemble dark horse of the main cast. People either love him or don't, but most of his fans really love him, lol. As for me, I find him an extremely unfortunate kid that just needs to let loose, which is why I see the Tamaki/Kyouya pairing so fitting while on the other hand, Kyouya/Haruhi just screams angst.

And I'm doing much, much better. Still taking medication, and have to go pick up another prescription today, but I'm finally going back to class and work today (typing this up in the office right now! lol) after missing all last week. I even went to a superbowl party yesterday, which was a lot of fun.

Hi there! I have personally always felt that reviews (or comments) are deserving if I bothered to read a story. I don't know, I'm such a review whore (giving and receiving). But I like leaving nice long reviews if I can, especially if I find lines that I really enjoy reading.

And I totally understand what you meant, now. Thanks for clarifying. Haha, and don't mind me... I could probably learn more from everyone else than the other way around. Back when I was in high school, we pretty much watched movies in English class and everyone passed with an A+ for doing absolutely nothing except some silly, easy, non-English (really) related exam. (Like writing your own version of The Canterbury Tales...yeah, most people finished that in less than an hour and got A+'s all year long.) In short, I learned absolutely nothing, and I only know of things like prepositions and pronouns. I honestly have no idea what they are.

(And someday I'd like to be a high school English teacher, so...yeah, if I make it back to school, I have a lot of work to do.)

Again, thanks so much for the clarification. =D

And you're right. Kyouya is insane. I mean, he is a really good character, and I think given a chance, he could be not only a nicer guy, but a really good man. Unfortunately, the cards life dealt him suck. Not only is he competing against his brothers, but he loves his brothers and doesn't want to step all over them to get what he wants. I think that shows a really interesting side to his character that proves he's not nearly as one-dimensional as, say, Renge thought he was initially. (Speaking of her, I wonder if she could ever click with the real Kyouya, given time and a chance.

I, er, don't support shonen-ai/yaoi(slash) pairings, nor do I write them, but I totally see what you mean. At least Tamaki's attitude is altogether light, which balances nicely with Kyouya's, and is probably one of the biggest reasons that they get along so well. Kyouya/Haruhi, on the other hand... I don't know how I feel. I don't like it. Really, I don't. It screams angst from the rooftops! Haha. And I love angst, but not...not like that? (I'm probably not making sense.)

For example, in the anime (can't remember if the wording was the same in the manga or not), when she says, "You wouldn't do it. You'd have nothing to gain."

"Nothing to gain? That's an interesting..." whatever it was he said. I'm sure you remember. I got two hours of sleep last night so I'm a tad wobbly. Either way, I think that shows another side of Kyouya, and it can be taken a few different ways. (He's commenting (to himself mostly) on Haruhi's completely innocent outlook. For example, maybe he thinks she doesn't realize that things like that aren't gained, because someone doesn't really have to gain anything from it.) I'm not saying that he would ever do anything to Haruhi to hurt her, because I don't really think he would. He is nicer than that. But Haruhi's "You'd have nothing to gain" outlook is awfully naive, and I think Kyouya would think so, too.

Or maybe he's trying to say he cares for her (as a friend? Or more!) by suggesting (mostly to himself) that he has nothing to gain? Hm? Is that so?

I'm pretty new to the whole fandom though, so I haven't gotten the chance to really pick apart all the characters. My main fandom (the ol' anime Rose of Versailles) is my main focus. Even after writing over 30 stories for it, including an 88,000 word ongoing 'fic (I'm still editing, haha), I'm not finished with picking apart the characters. And I mostly only work on picking apart a few at a time. (Blahblahblah)

I'm glad you're doing better! Prescriptions are so expensive, ugh, but if they help, they're totally worth it, hehe. And wow, so you work in an office? I'm so jealous! Oh, and glad you had fun at the superbowl party! I was too busy writing to watch the game. But I'm sure it'll be all they're talking about at work for the next there weeks. (My factory is slowing production and such, so we only have to work Tuesday-Thursday instead of Mon-Fri, which...you know, I *could* come in, but...I need time off. That job stresses me out far too much. =P

Excuse me while I subtly insert myself into this conversation....
~~~subtle~~~
I had actually also noted that last sentence and assumed there was some minor grammatical error, and I also now understand what you were actually going for and that it is way better than what I thought you were going for. Therefore I have a suggestion: add that idea of "still has to" into the final clause, so we know that you're resuming the pre-fighting-the-taste clause and not continuing it. ...I'm really hoping that I've worded that in a sensical manner.
Very subtle. ;D
Yeah, I figured that the last sentence would confuse people. But I'd already posted it and didn't know if changing it would send me over the 500 word limit, (and I'm incredibly lazy), so I left it. Glad I could clarify for the two of you tho'. >w<;; And that made complete sense to me, actually, lol. I'll be sure to try and make it clearer next time. C:
