02:00 AM Sep. 17, 2005 PT Think you're hot stuff? Bet you can't hold a candle to Frank Clewer, who left a trail of burning carpet in his wake after he walked through a building in southern Australia. Firefighters who arrived on the scene heard "a cracking noise -- a bit like a whip -- both inside and outside the building," according to fire official Henry Barton. Clewer had left the building, but when he realized he had melted the plastic on the floor of his car, he came back to get help. Clewer, who was wearing a woolen shirt and nylon jacket, had built up a firestorm of static electricity. "We tested his clothes with a static-electricity field meter and measured a current of 40,000 volts, which is one step shy of spontaneous combustion, where his clothes would have self-ignited," Barton said.
