International Criminal Court issues an arrest warrant for the President of Sudan. I cried so hard when I read that this morning.
You can argue all you want that the ICC doesn't have any real clout on the world stage, but I'm watching it gain momentum and credibility and this step of steps - the first time the ICC has ever issued a warrant for a sitting head of state - is so huge. It is a statement to the world that sovereignty can no longer be considered the supreme law above all else in all cases: a statement that there are consequences (however nebulous, ill-defined, and transitional they are right now) to systematically eliminating large swaths of the people whom you have sworn to protect. It is, in so many words, a big fucking deal.
