When it came, it came on like a tidal wave; it didn't all happen at once, but kicked in slowly that it was more and more improbable that McCain would make a comeback and win the election. Consequently, I didn't do all my crying at once, but began breaking down after Pennsylvania was called, and then Ohio, and then Virginia.
I was never sure whether I would ever feel proud of my country's reality, instead of just its potential; I certainly never thought I'd be proud of my state. Today, though, I am an American and I am a Virginian and I want to tell everybody I see.
All is not won; Proposition 8 passing in California reminds me jarringly, deeply, that we have so much work to do.
That being said, we have made history.
