WARNING! CONTAINS SPOLIERS!
Okay so to start off I didn't think the film wasn't as bad as some people made it out to be. Sure, there were a few continuity errors but overall it was a good film. I wouldn't say it was the best X-men film but it was good nonetheless.
I saw the film today - first day it was released- with three of my friends. My exams are now officially over as of today! Finally! So to celebrate, we went to our nearest shopping centre and saw X-Men First Class. There were roughly about 12 people in our screening but I think it shall probably be busier tonight when most people aren't at school or at work.
I won't go summarize as that is what Wikipedia is for :D Though for once, I didn't actually read Wikipedia so everything I saw at the cinema today was relatively new to me.
I thought the casting was well done and the actors played their characters pretty well. However, I did notice Magneto had an Irish accent at some points of the film. Speaking of accents, I was very disappointed with Moria MacTaggert's. She is a SCOTTISH geneticist
not and American CIA agent. That really did bug me. Although speaking of Scottish, I have to say I loved James McAvoy. I though he played Xavier extremely well, makes me proud to be Scottish. The fact he is quite hot also improved the film for me :D Magneto was pretty hot as well and how can I forget Beast?
I think some of the characters such as Magneto and Xavier well developed. You could see the reasoning behind their actions. However, I did feel that some characters were not well-developed. Two of these include Darwin and Angel. Darwin, I felt they could have developed him more before he was killed. He only got roughly five minutes screen time and then BAM! He's dead. Angel, I didn't like as I felt that her personality was not well developed. She had barely any dialogue and she betrayed the team.
Beast I liked to a relative extent. He was played by Nicholas Hoult pretty well (I applaud him on his believable American accent). However, I didn't like him towards the end. He insulted Mystique when she needed reassurance. And then... He transformed from pretty hot to this....
Seriously? This looks awful. I'm glad that he transformed towards the end of the film. He looks like a toy! Whereas in X-Men Last Stand he looked pretty awesome
See? Now this is what Beast should look like. Though I would have to admit I thought Beasts fight scenes were slightly better in this film Than X-Men Last Stand.
Emma was another character I adored though I felt that she should have got more screen time. She basically got captured by the FBI halfway through the film and didn't reappear until the end. However her character design was awesome, her costumes obviously followed her style from the comics in which she wears very revealing clothes. However, having Emma in this film also created a massive continuity error with X-Men Wolverine.
The picture of the left is from X-Men First Class and the photo on the right is from X-Men Wolverine. In X-men First Class I would say that Emma looks somewhere in her twenties. But, in X-Men Wolverine which chronologically takes place at least twenty years AFTER X-Men First Class, she looks in her late teens. Her powers do not include de-aging, they only include Telepathy and changing her body into diamond. So unless they completely disregard X-Men Wolverine then the writers have dug themselves into one massive error.
Getting away from the characters, I felt the plot was well developed. There wasn't a time where I felt the plot had slowed down and a lot happened during the two hours of film. I felt the fight scenes were done well to a certain extent - I didn't feel that some effects were as good as others. Banshee's flying I'm still a little wary of.
Although, the film was a mainly serious films, it still had its funny moments. My second favourite was when Banshee tried flying for the first time and failed.
What's my first? Well... If you have been reading this now and don't want to know I'd advise you'd leave now :D
Because my favourite moment involved my favourite character of the whole series. Who would that be? I'll give you one clue. He has metal claws.
To be completely honest, I had no idea Wolverine would make an appearance in this film. My friend, however, did not and decided not to inform me (she did however inform me that apparently James McAvoy shaved his head for the film and assumed that Xavier would go bald at some point in the film. He did not.). I seriously freaked like the sad fangirl I am, as soon as Hugh Jackman appeared on the screen. Classic Wolverine, smoking in a bar, drinking some beer (or whiskey, I couldn't tell) and telling people (Xavier and Mags) to piss off. Actually his exact words - and the best lines of the movie- were "Go fuck yourself". This line is also the only line with swear words. Seeing this thirty second scene made me so giddy, it took me a few more scenes to calm down. Seriously, I would've shown you guys a picture from the scene but sadly I cannot find any. This may be due to the fact that the film only came out today. :)
Also, making a cameo was Rebecca Romijn- The original actress who played Mystique. Only this time she didn't appear in the blue skins. Rather Mystique shifts into her for a few seconds. This is the second Rebecca has made an appearance in X-Men without Mystique's blue skin. She didn't have to wear the skin when Mystique seduces one of the security guards in X-Men 2. or X-2. I forget what it is actually called.
Also, there were hints to the comics that the fans would get. For example, William Striker is referred to. Also, you get to see the first version of Cerebro and Magneto's helmet. Although, I'm sure in the trilogy Magneto claims he made the helmet not Sebastian Shaw. However, I may not be correct so don't quote me on that.
One of the biggest disappointments for me was the ending. Not the ending of the plot but after the credits, MARVEL has for a few of their films (mostly X-Men) have added secret endings to their films. In fact they had 2 for Wolvie. But there was none for X-Men First Class. Even Xavier waking up and seeing all his hair on the pillow would've suited me fine. But yet there were none.
Overall, I did enjoy X-men First Class and would recommend seeing it. I would probably give it a 7 out of 10 due to some continuity errors (such as the Emma Frost issue and also Banshee not being Irish) and some of the effects I felt weren't up to scratch. Hugh Jackman's appearance certainly cheered me up and I feel they have created enough material to possibly create a sequel if they wanted to. I really hope they do considering that X-Men is the only Marvel item I like. I have seen some Fantastic Four but I have not yet watched Hulk, Iron Man or Thor. I may however end up watching the Captain America as I fear my friend may drag me to watch it. However, I in return shall probably drag her to watch Green Lantern so hopefully it shall even out. :D
