Life's treasures

I find it utterly amazing how over twenty hours of work can result in such an... unassuming, unimpressive ten and a half page paper. *With* footnotes and double spacing. I barely squeaked it out.

Have I mentioned I hate research? I really do. I love learning, but doing the tedious grunt work of research, I just have no stomach for it. Blech.

My paper was for my Egyptian Art and Archaeology class, where I had to compare and contrast royal and non-royal art during the period of my choice. Sounds simple, doesn't it? I chose Dynasties III and V (I'm an Old Kingdom nut), and decided that I would compare sculpture and relief as the art forms. I, in my imminent wisdom, could have hardly chosen a more difficult period to find sculpture that is *not* represented in our text books, for there is very little royal Dyn V art, and most from Dyn III that isn't Djoser's serdab (mortuary) statue, well, I don't know where it is. I also had to talk about the conventions of Egyptian art, the political and religious function of royal and non-royal art, and come up with a thesis for all of this that didn't just scream, 'Duh.' It all sounded so simple.

Oh yeah. Never did get to the relief sculpture. Oops.

I didn't mention a thing about previous research other than my massive references. How do you site previous work and study on a compare and contrast of this nature? Seriously, I hated this paper nearly as much as it hated me. Especially since I forgot I had to add the non-royal art comparison until, oh... 10:30pm last night. Not a pleasant thing to do.

Oh, finding the images was no piece of cake either.

On the bright side, I can now type King Netjerikhet with ease (the Horus, or throne name, of Djoser. Djoser is actually a Greek name assigned to the king; it does not appear in hieroglyphs.) Stick with me, and you'll know:

1st king of Dynasty III: Netjerikhet
2nd king of Dynasty V: Sahura
The famous statue of Dynasty III: Sepa
The high priest from Dynasty V: Ranofer

This is the last I'll complain about it. Besides, I still have two paper to write by Friday, and four to revise and edit.

My brain hurts something fierce.

Next week will be a 3-day week, then the following week is finals, then I get to go home!
