The weather here in the south is so bizarre. How can you have a thunder and rain storm with a clear sky?!
Ahem.
I do apologize for the prolonged absence. There was far more for me to deal with, confront, and attempt to overcome these past few weeks, most of them unexpected, that I've been so stressed at to provoke migraines and anxiety attacks. I can't say it's been pleasant so far, school wise. However, I think I'm at a turning point.
I've altered my schedule, dropping down from 15 units to 12 units, because graduate courses are far more difficult and time consuming than I'd imagined them to be. I was warned, but I was warned about my undergraduate courses too and those turned out to be easy for me. Also, I'm not used to having to work, and live on my own, while going to school full time, and I can tell you that my body is not adjusting well to the change. I'm hoping that, now that I finally have a set schedule and know what is expected of me that I'll be able to settle down into a normal routine that will allow me to resume the life I had before coming here, while simultaneously doing well in my classes. It's the hope, anyway.
I had my docent training introduction today. My goodness, I'm supossed to know the whole museum, including the contemporary art! Heh, even Dr. Podzorski, who's the Egyptologist (and one of my professors this semester) in charge of the Egyptology collections, isn't interested in contemporary art. ("It's not old enough to be interesting!" she said at the orientation XD) I have a CD with resources to study, and I won't be expected to begin giving tours until October, so that helps. Most of the tours will be to school children, a few teenage groups, and some freshmen on campus (it's required for them). I'm going to shadow a few tours given by the second year GAs to see how they do it, and I may ask Dr. Pozorski to watch me for my first attempt to make sure I've got it down. Visit the museum's website to see an example of the collection I'll be talking about!
Art Museum at the University of Memphis (AMUM).
My new schedule affords me Tuesdays and Thursdays off, which is relieving much of the stress. The Middle Egyptian is so dang difficult, French is French, and the texts for Egyptian Art and Archaeology is so dense that it takes forever to read, plus the research I have to do to be a good docent, will be more than enough to fill up my time will affording me the opportunity to play; you know, doing the laundry, cleaning, grocery shopping, the likes.
I know how to live it up.
Well, I've had a three hour break. Time to go back to Middle Egyptian. I now know how to write my name properly in hieroglyphs and transliteration! And it only took two full days of my life to accomplish! :P
