HFCS Experiment - Day 1

Jan 23, 2010 21:22

aisling 's travels in eliminating high fructose corn syrup have convinced me to go hard core and not let even one drop of it enter my system. Technically I started today, but I had a couple things which may have HFCS (coffee at McDonald's to get rid of a headache, Red Bull earlier to clear up my head cold a bit, and a root beer).

However, I did go grocery shopping today - needed to anyways - and very carefully made sure nothing had HFCS. Mostly veggies, but I also found HFCS-free/EBF-free (enriched bleached flour) bagels (Thomas's wheat) and yogurt (Stonyfield) fairly easily. Fortunately, since I have to shop in small batches I don't have anything with HFCS laying around. Anything that did have HFCS has either been used or gone bad.

I've already been gradually decreasing my intake. First to go was the Arizona Green Tea - I ran out of that about Tuesday and ever since then I've been waking up about 6 hours after going to sleep feeling quite rested. I've also found it easier to not be stressed from time to time. I'm still generally anxious, but not as bad.

Once the Green Tea was gone, the only things I had left with HFCS were the Columbo yogurt and onion rolls - both of those went bad today, so my pantry and fridge are now 100% HFCS-free. I had one onion roll and half a tub of that yogurt left - I dropped my consumption from 2-3 times a day to maybe once a day after the Green Tea ran out, so a good chunk went bad before I got to it.

However, dropping my consumption wasn't a conscious decision. The first day after Green Tea, the yogurt and onion rolls didn't taste so "yummy fresh". The next day I could definitely taste something chemical-ish. Like my yogurt probably would've been better used to clean industrial equipment.

Ironically enough, I've actually found it easier to focus before eating because all I had on hand at the time had HFCS. I'm curious how and if that may change now that my food stocks are improved...

my path, hfcs
