Anyone want to give me a cool $400 so I can do my bicentennial shopping for clothes that don't have holes in them? I never have luck with the thrift stores around here (though maybe that's because I've only been to the Garment District). Also, I need worky clothes again. Like tailored black pants and the like

An easy way to do it -- buy pants in a basic color like black or brown. Then find a slightly fitted collared shirt with fine stripes. Make sure one of the stripes is the same color as the pants and the other ones can be anything you like and you will match and look professional. I like Eddie Bauer's no-iron shirts. A bit pricey but they truly don't have to be ironed and they are well made and fit nicely.
The other thing to think about is fabric. It's better to buy things, even if they are a little more expensive, that are well made and of good fabric. They will sit better and wear better. Cheap clothes are exactly that -- cheap. In a year or two you'll end up replacing them or not being able to wear them the way you wanted (lounging around the house vs. wearing to work).
