Almost Fired

Jun 20, 2004 10:57

Yeah, go me. I went and almost lost my job last night because I got pissed off. Thankfully now, everything is fixed, and I'll prolly go in tonight and apologize for going off on my boss, but in some respects he deserved it.

Well I guess I should explain what happened. We now have this policy where the roller can get cut at anytime. Sure fine and dandy and we all agreed on it at the meeting last weekend. It is also the roller's job to make sure that they get checked out by the Key or Manager that night. This has not been happening.

So last night, the roller was there all night. It was 11pm and I got my reading and was closing up and doing my bag. The next thing I know she is coming in with linens and restocking. I asked her if she was cut, and she said yes. I said okay..make sure you get checked out. She finished restocking and asked if there was anything else I needed. I said nope, and thought that she was already checked. I went to go to the office and notice two racks of silverware there. Heather was already gone. They had cut the roller at the same time as me, and were going to make me roll the rest of the silverware.

I was in the office and Joe came in and asked to make sure that I did the silverware before I left. I flat out told him no. Nope..not when you cut the roller and you didn't check them out. HE told me that he can't be responsible for knowing what is okay to leave me. Hello!! That is your job..you're the manager.

I got my bag done and was restocking my station and about to punch out, when Phil came around the corner and wanted to know why I wasn't rolling the silverware. I told him cause it's not my job. I'm cut, and I'm all done. I told him that Joe cut the roller at the same time as me, and I'm all done. He started going off on me. Telling me at the meeting that we agreed that no matter what time the roller was cut it was the togo person's job to finish up the silverware. Sorry, not when the roller gets cut at the same time as me. He then asked why he was paying two people to do the same job. He's not. He's paying me 6.75 and the servers are paying the roller who is on tipshare, and then Phil is paying the roller 2.83. I still don't get this. Why would you rather have the togo person on to do silverware at 6.75 an hour vs. 2.83. Hello, do you need to go back to managing school???

Then I brought up the fact that she wasn't checked out before she left, and I told him what Joe said to me. Phil did roll his eyes at that comment, cause he knows Joe did screw up. (Mind you all this time I was crying because I had a shitty night and didn't get helped at all.) He said fine...let Mary and Ashley know that from now on since his manager can't be bothered..rolling of the eyes again...the togo person will now check out the roller. So, that way it will be more fair to us on how much silverware to leave.

In the point where he was yelling at me he did threaten my job. Yeah, he told me that maybe I shouldn't be a ToGo person anymore. At that point, I almost did walk out. But I know I need this job.

I calmed down a little before I said I'm sorry for giving him 'attitude', but I had a shitty night because no one helped me while I was busy, and I didn't make any money. Phil asked why. I told him that my roller couldn't be bothered with it. He asked me to explain. I got busy after Ashley was cut...(there are two togo people on Saturdays, plus one roller.) I told him of the one issue which made my night where I was boxing up two separate orders in the kitchen, when I heard the phone ring. The roller is supposed to help me out when I can't get to the phone. Especially since the togo person when they aren't busy will help the roller polish the silverware. It's a team effort, that is why the roller is trained in togo. (That's another subject for later on.) I heard the phone stop ringing, and thought great, Heather got my order and she'll bring it in here so I can get it going. Nope...I happened to look up and saw Heather stroll into the kitchen, tell me to my face that the silverware was backed up so she was going to rack it, and by the way...I had an order on the phone that had been waiting for a couple of minutes. I swore, "Fuck!" really loud and ran through the kitchen. Phil shook his head it seemed to me remembering me tearing through the kitchen. I think I broke the plate I slammed down too. Anyways...I get on the phone and apologize profusily because I know that I need to make any kind of money that I can and when stupid shit like this happens, I don't get tipped. The lady understood and gave me her order. When it was all done, I boxed it up and made my way back to the togo room...Heather was no where to be found. I looked up at my tv monitor, and saw a car there. I yelled again...Damnit Heather where are you???!!! I went out to the car, tried as best I could to smile and be friendly. I asked how long she had been waiting, and she said about three minutes, and I apologized again for making her wait. Thank goodness she gave me a $5.00 tip.

I asked Phil if Heather was trained in Togo..and he said yes. I told him, nope I don't think so. Just by the way she was acting tonight. She didn't know how to write tickets, like a simple S for sour cream for the topping of a baked potato. Phil told me that he was under the impression that she completed all four days in togo before she was allowed to roll. I told him that I didn't think so. Cause for the past couple of days she has been following me around and trying to learn everything. I'm not a trainer, and I don't get paid to train so he better get this straightened out. Cause when I'm busy, I need help and if she isn't going to be helping me then I'm not helping her with silverware, I don't get paid for that. That is when he agreed with me. He said that he will talk to Dale about it.

I got up today and called Mary at work. I told her about the new changes about checking out the roller. And then I told her what happened to me last night. I asked her what she would of done, and she said, she would of walked out and punched out. Unfortunately, she really doesn't need this job. I told her then what happened with the extra people hanging out in the togo room. While Heather was rolling, Kara was constantly in the room, then Kelly was hanging out after she got cut, and then Cassie came in with her friend and hung around, all the while I am trying to get to my drawer and answer the phone. I can't hear on the phone when other people are talking in the room. Mary told me that she would of kicked out everyone. I told her, "But Mary, people expect you to be a bitch in that situation, and I'm not like that." She told me maybe that I need to start acting like that. Mary told me that her and I are the only ones who treat that job as our job. We're not there to have fun. This is our job at the moment and we take it seriously. Well when the other people are under the age of 20, they are still in high school..they don't understand.
