I call it the curse of Sim Lim Square:
Each time you want to do a PC assembly/upgrade,
you need to go there 3 times exactly - no more, no less.
I was running the
Oldie but Goldie Intel Socket 478 processor + i865 chipset.
The very well-built Gigabyte 8IPE1000 lasted me a full 6 years,
outlasting 2x MSI boards which couldn't take the P4's heat.
I believe the processor is still alive.
Been very diligently cleaning the heatsink.
Just that the MB's Dual BIOS both died consecutively.
However, socket 478 is completely outdated.
Along with it, the legacy 1st generation DDR400(!) DIMM,
1x AGP graphics card and IDE-based DVD+RW drive.
Retained my 2x SATA HDDs which thanks goodness, is still alive and full of 'stuff'.
Bought the soon to be legacy Intel LGA 775 (3.06ghz), with the very
all en-compassing/ everything integrated Gigbyte EG41M Combo board.
S$172 all in - pretty decent power/price ratio.
The EG41M really does have EVERYTHING onboard in a microATX form factor,
which made installing easier actually within a medium ATX tower.
Added in 2GB of DDR3-1333 Kingston for only S$19!
My media-centre PC is now revived.
The PCI-based TV tuner card made it too, thank goodness.
Giving away the spare items in working condition if anyone needs them:
1) Intel Soc 478/ 3.0Ghz Processor
2) 1 GB Kingston DDR400 RAM (2x 512 running in Dual Channel)
3) VIOS 500W Power Supply
4) Riva TNT2 Pro AGP Card
5) SB Live! (PCI-based)
6) Plenty of SATA/ IDE cables, power connectors etc.
