Masquerade
This scene's so hypnotic
Smoking mirrors, lights and magic
Paper faces in gold
There's solider boys, beauty queens
Everyone's a mystery
It's got me losing control
AJ walked into the ballroom and looked around. Everywhere there were women in beautiful dresses and men in debonair suits, all wearing masks.
The Backstreet boys were on a cruise for Howie’s charity, the Dorough Lupus Foundation, and tonight, the final night, there was a grand masquerade ball.
AJ looked around, surprised that, even though he knew them so well, when they were wearing masks, he couldn’t spot his friends anywhere in the crowd.
AJ walked over to the bar and ordered a drink, non-alcoholic of course. As he stood there, he noticed a man in a smart black tux and a sequined and feathered white mask looking at him. He met the man’s eyes, just for a second, and was surprised at the rich blue colour of them.
Yearning, I'm yearning for the one to steal my eyes
Wanna play in this game of disguise
AJ felt the slight inkling of recognition, but he didn’t know why.
“Are you enjoying the cruise?” asked the stranger, moving closer to him. AJ could smell his aftershave, it was intoxicating.
“Yeah I am, I love the sun. Are you?” AJ asked him back.
“Yes it’s been very enjoyable,” replied the stranger, with a country twang to his accent. AJ found it cute.
“So why are you here?” asked the stranger.
“Oh, I’m a friend of the man who organized the cruise” said AJ.
“How about you?”
“I’m a friend of the man who organized the cruise as well” replied the stranger.
“Really?” AJ began racking his brains, trying to figure out who it could be. It couldn’t be one of his band mates, he would know instantly, but it was no good. Howie had lots of friends.
It's a masquerade, a love parade
So won't you stay and dance with me
All through the night and day
My masquerade, I need you baby
So stay with me tonight
They were silent for a few minutes. AJ looked out at the dance floor. It had gotten more full as the evening had gone on and people had had more to drink. The dry ice being pumped into the air made the room smoky and AJ’s throat dry, so he turned to order another drink from the bar.
“I’ll get that” said the stranger, handing over the dollars before AJ had even had a chance to get his wallet out.
“Thanks” said AJ, smiling at the stranger. Was he flirting?
“So…do you like being in a band?” asked the stranger, leaning closer and almost whispering the question. Yep, definitely flirting. AJ looked him up and down again. Not bad…not bad at all.
“How did you know I was in a band?” asked AJ.
“I didn’t, you just told me,” laughed the stranger. AJ pouted at being tricked, but laughed too, he liked this guys cheesy sense of humor.
“Yes, I like it. Now I think it’s only fair that you tell me what you do” said AJ, glaring playfully at the stranger.
Just like a perfect dream, I don't ever wanna leave
A thousand freaks in the show
One's a tiger, one's a lynx
One's a king that suffering
Moving high, moving low
Burning, I'm burning, can't you see it in my eyes?
Wanna play in this game of disguise
“How about we dance?” asked the stranger, looking at him.
“Hey! No fair!” said AJ.
“I think it’s very fair. Technically you didn’t tell me what you do. I just guessed. So I don’t have to tell you anything” said the stranger, standing up and extending his hand towards AJ.
“So I ask again. Dance?”
AJ avoided looking into the man’s eyes, which were staring so intensely at him. Did he want to risk it? Nobody knew who he was in this mask. Could he dance with this man and still keep his secret?
Deciding that he could, he took the man’s hand. It was soft and warm and made AJ feel tingly.
He allowed himself to be pulled into the middle of the dance floor. The heat rising the closer they got to the centre.
It's a masquerade, a love parade
So won't you stay and dance with me
All through the night and day
My masquerade, I need you baby
So stay with me tonight
AJ watched as the stranger began to dance, quite innocently at first. He danced really well and AJ was almost entranced. AJ was a good dancer himself, but he suddenly felt very self-conscious.
The stranger pulled him and little closer and AJ began to move in time with him.
It was crowded on the dance floor, and as more and more people joined, AJ and his dance partner moved closer and closer together, until finally, their hips bumped together.
It was like a bolt of electricity shooting up AJ’s spine as they touched and he jerked a little bit. Instead of moving away, the stranger shot him a wicked smile and placed his hands on AJ’s hips, pulling him even closer.
AJ fell in time with the stranger and they began to move as one, in liquid motions. AJ raised his hands and placed them around the man’s neck, risking a look at his face. The man’s eyes were glowing and he had a delicious smile on his face.
AJ couldn’t help himself. He just had to do it. Knowing he could get away with it, he reached up and kissed the man gently on the lips.
I gotta know the guy behind the mask
Let me in, where you've been, don't pretend
Dreamed that I had her alone
Show your face to me, we could be everything
AJ pulled away after just a second, feeling himself going bright red. Since when did he get so daring?
He looked back up at the stranger, saw that he was smiling and relaxed again. This time it was the stranger that bent down to kiss him. Harder this time, and longer. AJ loved the feel of his lips. They were so soft.
He felt the strangers tongue against his lips and opened his mouth. Immediately the man’s tongue rushed forward to meet his and they stopped moving, just stood there in the heat and the smoke, kissing passionately.
When they broke apart, AJ leant up to the man’s ear.
“Who are you?” he asked. The man looked down at him.
“You really want to know?” he asked. AJ nodded.
“Are you sure?” the man asked, again. AJ frowned slightly but still nodded, not a little worried.
“Ok, said the man. He took AJ’s hand and led him off the dance floor and out onto the deck. He walked him all the way down to the other end of the ship, where it was deserted.
“I really enjoyed tonight” said the stranger, almost sadly.
“Well so did I. That’s why I want to know who you are” said AJ.
“You’ll hate me when you find out” said the stranger.
“Why would I?” asked AJ.
“Because I’ve been tricking you. I made you believe that I was a stranger” said the man, now sounding upset.
“Who are you?” asked AJ, now feeling very worried. The man reached up and pulled off his mask. AJ gasped.
“Brian!”
“I’m sorry AJ…I just wanted one night with you. Where nobody knew who I was…including you”
“Why?” asked AJ
“Because I have feelings for you…and I was too scared to tell you…and this ball was my one chance to feel like I’m with you, even for a few hours…I’m sorry…I should have told you” said Brian, almost crying now.
AJ looked at Brian. He was so gorgeous, and so upset that he’s lied to AJ. He stepped closer to Brian, and put his hand on the blonde’s cheek.
“Brian, you didn’t even need to lie to me” said AJ, looking at him.
“I didn’t?” asked Brian, looking confused.
“No” whispered AJ, reaching up to kiss Brian again, shortly and sweetly.
“ AJ I don’t…”
“Shhhh…just go with it” said AJ.
“But the guys…”
“Let’s not worry about that just now” said AJ, silencing Brian with another kiss.
It's a masquerade, a love parade
So won't you stay and dance with me
All through the night and day
My masquerade, I need you baby
So stay
A masquerade, a love parade
So won't you stay and dance with me
All though the night and day
My masquerade, I need you baby
So stay with me tonight
