soul eater notes, terminology, et all.

Aug 29, 2008 14:28

SO. This is my attempt to compile a lot of the technical terms and whatnot that are thrown around in Soul Eater. I'm going through the scanlations and picking out quotes when I can as well as filling stuff in with my own explanations. When possible, uh. Please note that some of this is very sketchy because there's stuff that hasn't really been clarified in canon! And a lot of this is just me tossing out quotes that explain things. Any comments, corrections, and/or elaborations would be greatly appreciated. I'm not even touching on the different characters' techniques because wiki has a decent write-up on that.

I wrote this up as I reread the manga, so there's a lot of "maybe it's this. eta: YEAH IT IS." and whatnot. As of September 18th, 2008, this draws heavily from the first 23 chapters, with some stuff from the later chapters.

One day, I will make fancy HTML in here. Until then ...

TECHNICIANS AND WEAPONS
Also known as "meisters," Technicians fight with the Weapons and collect the souls for them.

"What is your duty as "Technicians" and "Weapons"?"
"To feed the "Weapons" 99 human souls and 1 with soul and make Shinigami-sama's weapon, a "Death Scythe"."
- Shinigami-sama, Maka

Weapons are used by the Technicians. They can change between forms at will, and even fight with other weapons (The Thompson sisters use one another in Intro 3). They are born as weapons (according to Liz in chapter 14).

There are ranks amongst Technicians, the highest of which is Three-Stars. (Chapter 1) Maka and Black*Star are One-Star techs. Technicians and their weapons have completely different wavelengths. The more that they can align them, the more powerful both become together. (Chapter 3, Soul and Black*Star are completely off whereas Kid and the Thompson Sisters are completely in tune with one another)

"Before a Technician and a Weapon fight an enemy, they have to face each other's souls."
- Stein (Chapter 3)

- SOUL RESONANCE
Soul calls it "tuning in" on his "soul's frequency." When the two souls resonate, they can perform stronger techs. Seen prominently with Maka in chapter 1 and Kid in chapter 3.

"Soul Resonance ... a Tech sends one's soul wavelength into his weapon, which amplifies it and sends it back ... You can produce a massive soul wavelength when you repeat the action."
- Stein (Chapter 2)

"Hm Hm. Your soul wavelengths aren't very stabilized. [...] You're not working together."
"He must be a first class tech to even be able to see our personalities!"
- Dr. Stein, Maka

"The relationship between a Technician and his weapon is like an electric guitar and its amp. The sound (soul wavelength) an electric guitar (Tech) can produce on its own is tiny, but ... when you connect it to an amp (Weapon), it amplifies the "soul wavelength" and a strong power is produced."
- Shinigami-sama (Chapter 2)

iscrewtothink has an essay over here that goes into more detail on the technician-weapon relationship/abilities/etcetc. And while I prefer having one giant post of infodumping, Wiki's got a decent explanation over here about soul resonance, wavelengths, et all.

SHINIGAMI
... Yeah, here is where it gets confusing because I personally don't get the distinction between Shinigami and Technicians. It seems that Shinigami are at a higher level of technical skill than the Technicians who are trying to power up their weapons, but how they became Shinigami and the qualifications are-- not apparent. I mean. Does a Technician become a Shinigami? Is there something else they do? I HAVE NO CLUE and I play one, oops. eta: This was touched on in later translated chapters. Shinigami are much more powerful, with longer lifespans et all. They're gods, in a sense! Kid also talks about how he already understands the theory behind souls and whatnot.

"Kidd, you're a Shinigami, you don't really need to have a soul collection or raise weapons."
"I want to make my own weapon on my own."
- Shinigami-sama, Kidd (Intro 3)

"Didn't you make us so you could become the perfect Shinigami!!"
- Liz (Intro 3)

Chapter 13 soooort of touches on what a shinigami can do? Kid can sense souls fairly easily, it seems - this is something that Maka picks up on in the first few chapters and uses later in chapter 10, but she has to really concentrate. The guy in chapter 13 also makes a clear distinction between humans and shinigami, and Kid notes after the Brew incident in the 30s that he's stronger because he has a "god's body."

"Humans and gods both have weaknesses."
- Kid (Chapter 14)

Aaaand in chapter 53, Mosquito talks about how shinigami have been around for hundreds of years. I assume that while Kid is fairly young, he will live a lot longer than, say, Maka or Black*Star.

- THE LINES OF SANZU
Mentioned in chapter 53. A reference to the white lines on a shinigami's hair.

- Kid's were said to be "incomplete," meaning that he's still young.

- Possibly linked to how powerful a shinigami is? Mosquito is disdainful of Kid because his Lines are incomplete.

DEATH SCYTHE
A weapon fit for use by a shinigami. Powerful.

"If you collect 99 human souls and 1 witch soul, you can become a "Death Scythe" for the first time--"
- Shinigami-sama (Intro 1)

It can ALSO be done if one collects a "strong soul." The problem is that the strong soul is ... hella powerful.

"But in truth, there's a way to do it without collecting all 99 human souls! It's uncommon, but among humans there are a few who possess a strong soul."
- Shinigami-sama (Intro 2)

Maka's Papa is a Death Scythe, but before he became one, his name was "Spirit." It's unknown as of yet exactly in canon why his name is now "Death Scythe," although from the implications in chapter 23, I'm assuming it has something to do with his abilities, plus the fact that there's references here and there to how Maka's mother made "an excellent Death Scythe" or something like that. There are actually several that appear later on in the manga (chapter 23), and it's said that there are Death Scythes from Europe, East Asia, Southwest Asia, Oceania, South America, and Africa.

AS SPECULATION, it strikes me as being a title/rank for all of them (Marie, Azusa, Spirit, etc), but given Spirit's position as the Death Scythe of North America and the whole "lol Shinigami's scythe!" thing, he's likely to be the most powerful of them all, hence actually taking the title as his name.

eta: Justin Law was the youngest to become a Death Scythe. He managed to become one (by himself!) at age 13 (he is currently 17, as of chapter 26).

WITCHES
From Wiki: "Considered dangerous by most people, most witches are only interested in self-gain, no matter who gets in their way." They have a great deal of magic power, and they can camoflague it with "soul protect". The insanity wavelength helps awaken witches and their powers (chapter 23).

"Soul Protect. It's one of the advanced magics that witches use. It's a magic that surrounds a witch's soul and effectively neutralizes its wavelength, camouflaging the witch as a normal human being."
- Stein (Chapter 5)

"As long as you keep the soul protected, it is the same as us attacking an ordinary human."
- Eruka on attacking a protected Medusa (Chapter 9)

"Our battle against the witches started centuries ago ... witches always created new curses and to counter that we need new technicians and weapons. And it is to rival withh the witches that new techs with the ability to sense souls are born."
- Shinigami-sama (Chapter 16)

BLACK BLOOD
"My blood is black."
"I think ... I think his blood is the "weapon." So, we cut his skin, but his blood solidified and the blade was stopped by his vein ..."
- Chrona, Maka

BLOOD OF INSANITY. No, really though, yet another thing that Ohkubo has a hard time defining. Chrona possesses the "black blood," which does the above and ultimately leads her to having very ... questionable sanity. Additionally, her weapon, Ragnarok, is literally apart of her and emerges from her. Soul gets infected by the black blood and has dreams of bursting from Maka in a similar manner.

The blood itself can be used as a weapon, which is how Chrona uses it, both to attack and defend. Medusa also makes mention of how the black blood has ... something to do with kishin? Increasing the probably of one becoming one?

"The weapon contaminated with the black blood disturbs even its technician's mind."
- Medusa (Chapter 11)

... there is more on the black blood in chapters 18 and 19, with the Maka-Chrona fight.

soblackinside talks more about the black blood in an essay over here.

KISHIN
"A great, terrible god."
- (Notes from Chapter 4)

Kishin are like the Hollows of Soul Eater, basically. They're evil souls that eventually gain a lot of nasty powers. Soul Eater has never settled on a real definition for them! We know that one becomes a kishin when they start consuming souls that aren't on Shinigami-sama's list (the souls that are on the list are evil souls that could become kishin).

"Kishin ... that's the reason Shibusen was made."
- Stein (Chapter 5)

"What was the reason that Dr. Stein mentioned about you two leaving Shibusen? The seed of the "kishin" that Ragnarok was talking about, what is it?"
"Hey, Maka. Between an evil soul and a good soul, you know which one makes someone stronger, right?"
"Yeah. The good soul, right? But we can't take those ..."
"That's right ... because the ones on Shinigami-sama's list are only the bad ones. "Collecting souls" is a battle against bad people ... fights which are often accompanied by death. A long time ago, before Shibusen existed, not like it is now where there are Techs and Weapons, originally it was Shinigami-sama who collected souls. There was a rule that said "only souls listed on Shinigami-sama's list can be collected." And then one day during a fight, one Tech could not bear the fear of death and went after a "good soul". Because once he had the "power," he wouldn't lose again. That tech went into hiding and started to let its weapon eat souls that were not on the list ... and so, "kishin" was born. The Shinigami Weapon Tech Specialty School is a place to monitor and educate Techs and Weapons while they are young ... so that another "kishin" wouldn't be born."
- Maka, Death Scythe (Chapter 6)

"Weakness of mind leads one to choose a life as "kishin". The original kishin seek the power to escape from their fear of death. Why did Youtou Masamune choose that way of life?"
- Stein (Chapter 8)

"I need to abandon human empathy once and for all to become a kishin."
- Masamune (Chapter 8)

"The power of kishin exceeds human comprehension, even evolution itself."
- Medusa (Chapter 15)

... Chapter 16 has the story of the first Kishin, Asura, and I am way too damn lazy to type it all out. Here, have the cliff notes version: ONCE THERE WAS A DUDE NAMED ASURA WHO HAS HAIR THAT IS SUSPICIOUSLY LIKE KID'S. HE WORE LOTS OF HEADBANDS AND WRAPPINGS. AND THEN HE FEARED DEATH. AND WENT BAWWW. AND ATE THINGS, LIKE HIS WEAPON. GJ THERE, ASURA.

THEN SHINIGAMI-SAMA RIPPED HIS SKIN OFF AND SEALED HIM AWAY.

THE END.

Asura has the soul wavelength of a god, and his soul wavelength is referred to as an "insane wavelength." Basically, it has an effect on one's sanity.

SHIBUSEN
As mentioned above, Shinigami-sama made it to monitor and educate Techs and Weapons. Free, who has been imprisoned for 200 years, knows of Shibusen. It's unclear if he could have just heard about it or what, but it's proooobably safe to assume that the school has been around for at least that long. Founded on Christmas Eve.

Located in Nevada.

THE WORLD

... is actually a somewhat real world setting. Shibusen is located in Death City, and they mention Death Scythes from Europe, East Asia, Southwest Asia, Oceania, South America, and Africa. Yes, this means Shibusen is located in North America. Death City's location hasn't been confirmed, but ... come on. Nevadaaaaa. And we do see the kids traveling around the world, like in chapter 10, Maka, Soul, Black*Star, and Tsubaki all go off to train in London.

"I was once "Brooklyn's Demon"."
- Liz (Chapter 13)

Thompson sisters are from Brooklyn! Given that Death City is located in Nevada, Death Scythe (Spirit) is probably the Death Scythe of North America.

HOSHIZOKU
Black*Star's clan, a group of assassins who would do anything for money. After "making enemies all over the place" (in Black*Star's words), Shibusen exterminated them 13 years ago. Black*Star was taken in by Shibusen after that.

... HOPEFULLY, WE'LL GET A BLACK*STAR. WHO CAN TALK ABOUT THIS THEMSELVES.

DEMON GOD, DEMON BLADE
[Kidd] ... okay so the one thing that annoys me about the scanlations
[Kidd] Are the constant term changes
[Kidd] I mean. Is a demon god the same thing as a kishin?

MY ONE MAJOR ISSUE. "Demon gods" get mentioned and thrown around in the scanlations as much as "kishin." Demon god got tossed around with Chrona, it gets mentioned with Masamune, and I honestly cannot see the difference from what they are saying. eta 20 minutes later: - and see, in chapter 7 they say demon god, and chapter 8 they use Kishin. I am ASSUMING that demon god = kishin, since that. Seems like a valid translation? eta EVEN LATER: And chapter 9 they say kishin/demon gods YEAH OKAY, IT'S THE SAME THING.

As for a demon blade:
"A demon blade plays upon the fear that lies in the hearts of people, possessing the soul in order to control the body. In the end, once the soul is sucked dry, it becomes a demon god."
- Stein (Chapter 7)

I can't find the immediate reference, but when Arachne shows up, they talk about how she is the "mother of all Demon Weapons."

DEMON TOOL
Comes into play after chapter 23, consisting of things like "Brew" and the tool on the "Runaway Express" in the Sahara. Considered to be powerful and dangerous, both Shibusen and Arachnophobia compete against each other to secure these tools.

BREW
Also known as the Demon Tool "Tempest." Was on an island known as "Lost Island" just north of Alaska. One of the things it's capable of is soul amplification (chapter 53). Originally thought to have been retrieved by Arachnophobia, but was actually taken first by Medusa.

EIBON DEATH

... idk my bff canon.
