Mushrooms

Mohinder woke up to the smell of antiseptic and the sting of a needle in his arm.

His eyes fluttered open to reveal the worried face of Jonathan and Miss Savestri, his nominated emergency contact.

His face felt vaguely numb, his fingers not attached though he could feel them move.

“Mohinder?” Miss Savestri smiled weakly. “You’re in hospital, Mohinder. Do you remember anything?”

He swallowed, his throat raw and dry. Jonathan was there in an instant, pressing a glass into his hands and helping him to sit up slowly. “Sip, nothing more. You collapsed at the table during dinner. The hospital said it was probably the home made sauce. The mushrooms.”

“I called your parents.”

He must have shown his panic.

“The hospital said you’ll be fine, so they’re not coming over.” Miss Savestri brushed back his hair from his forehead. “You were very sick, Mohinder. You’re lucky you didn’t have a worse reaction.”

“Unlucky you got the dodgy mushroom though.” Jonathan took the glass away, but held his hand instead. “You gave us a hell of a fright.”

“We can’t stay. They said we could stay until you regained consciousness, but it’s past visiting hours and you need sleep.” She stood, sari rustling as she bent over to kiss his cheek. “I’ll call you tomorrow, Mohinder.”

Jonathan waited for her to leave before kissing Mohinder’s forehead softly, between his eyebrows. “They’re discharging you tomorrow probably. I’ll come by after class to get you, okay?”

He nodded. He was surprisingly tired for having done nothing.

“You really were lucky. I know you’ve had a rotten couple of days, but death by dodgy mushroom just would’ve been too much, even for you.”

He chuckled. It burnt his throat and made his stomach ache.

“Relax. I’ll come back tomorrow. Bring your toothbrush even.”

He went to speak, but fingers came to a rest against his lips. “You’re welcome. Sleep well.”

He was asleep before Jonathan even left the room.
