The Independent: more disappointing freebies

Sep 18, 2007 13:18

Oh dear. The freebies that come with the Independent are always jinxed and crap in some way....
What is their dang problem?

First it was the photography supplements, which turned out to be one genuinely useful supplement followed by about ten which were all glorified ads/howtos for Photoshop.

And now the Indy are running a Great Composers series, complete with free classical music downloads (when you buy their paper). However, each classical mp3 you can download is only the first 30 seconds. But nowhere does it say this - you have to find out by downloading. What sort of inept rubbish is this?

For the Independent, "freebie" = "attempting to funnel you into some companies sales pipeline".

Update 2007-09-19
Spoke too soon. They have a system whereby the track listings link directly to the 30second preview mp3s. However, there is also a button to add all the tracks "to your basket", and then you have to go to your basket and click separately on each item in your basket to download it - can't use a download tool, like you can for the previews. And I just couldn't get the downloads to happen from the basket page. So I have officially given up.
