David Irving and Holocaust Denial

Dec 21, 2006 12:56

I have mixed feelings about the news that David Irving is being released early. At the same time as knowing the Holocaust was and is a horrible thing (and its disingenuous denial a horror too), I feel uncomfortable about the questioning of it being a crime. I know that there truly isn't free speech per se - you can't shout "Fire!" in a crowded theatre, you can't incite racial hatred as you please - but shouldn't we face such denial with facts, and by telling the truth? What is that dividing line that means some facts are protected by law, and most are not?
