"Sled" and "Spirit"

Two prompts, 200 words. Whoo-hoo! I thought I was gonna be stuck on this one for sure. So I didn't dare read. Now it seems like there's either time to write *OR* time to read. For now, I gotta post and run. Hopefully I'll be back to check out some of this great stuff before the weekend!

Three inches of snow on the ground, but it was enough to scare half the little ladies away from the quilt group Chrismukkahtmas lunch. But it was a good time. Oh, and up to 2 FEET of snow possible by tomorrow. But the 'weather guess' can vary widely up here depending on altitude and winds, and I'm pretty sure the whims of kokopelli.....

On to the fic. Don't own it, not getting rich, just having fun.

Dubious, Ryan considered the item on the barn’s wall.

His nose rebelling against the strong odor of livestock, he still jumped when a nearby cow mooed loudly. I never even saw a cow up close before this weekend.

Milk comes from the convenience store.

This sled’s an antique....

He feared breaking it. His family had never owned anything long enough for it to develop sentimental value. Besides, it doesn’t look....safe. Grey wooden slats and rusty red metal runners held but hints of their original paint.

It had belonged to his girlfriend’s grandfather, used joyfully by each generation since. After dinner, great-uncle Ben, her oldest living relative, had insisted good-naturedly, “Lindsay, you take your young man out to the pasture and teach him what snow’s for. That California weather makes you kids soft.”

I couldn’t admit in front of her whole family that I was already freezing, indoors.

Her soft voice interrupted his reverie. “We don’t have to, you know. We can just take a walk, or--”

His kiss was grateful. She understood how foreign sledding and snow and freaking cows, were. It soothed his spirit....and bolstered his courage. Smiling slowly, he whispered, “C’mon Gardner, teach me how to sled.”
