Debut of the Foster Dog

For those of you who don't already know, Mike and I are fostering a rescue dog for Golden Gate Basset Rescue. He's about a year and a half old and a true rescue. They got him out of the Merced County shelter 4 hours before they were scheduled to euthanize him, and he was at my house about 2 hours later. We've had him for just over a week now.

When I first saw him it actually hurt. He's severely underweight, and it turns out he's also been abused somewhere along the way. The first hint of that was when he cowered down onto the floor if anyone raised their voice. The second was when our vet mentioned that the ribs on his right side have a very sharp turn in them where someone probably kicked him quite a while ago, since they're completely healed. Fortunately they don't bother him or interfere with his breathing.

Despite all this, he's a truly sweet dog and adores everyone. While he really wants food, he'd rather have love if a choice must be made. The big surprise is that he gets along great with our cat. Carson (who is capable of being afraid of anything, including things that aren't actually there) has absolutely no problem with him. He and Josie have even started to play together, though it's only for a short while at any give time. He just doesn't have any energy reserves and gets worn out pretty quickly.

Mike is pretty adamant that he's 'just a foster' and that when GGBR finds a permanent home for him we'll be sending him on his way. We'll see. :)
