Last night I went to my first ceilidh (pronounced kaylee), a kind of Scottish community getogether, that involves lots of booze, some Robbie Burns poetry recitation and lot's of trad Scottish music. It was so much fun. They organizers even had the forethought to hire a minibus so everyone could get back home safely. There' a saying about the Scots, it you don't know them you will in about 10 minutes. These people are so friendly, in the most comfortable pull-up-a-chair kind of way. I sat at a table with three couple and within 5 minutes wa deeply embroiled in the latest local gossip and who was the best dancer or had the worst breath. I really feel like a fit right in. I was born to be Scottish. That weird sens of humour I have that'sa bit hard to follow sometimes? Scottish. My obsession with bagpipe music and rain and Highland cows? Well that goes without saying. I'm so excited to go home... but just as excited to come back eventually. It's kind of scary how well it suits me to live here, because here is a very long way from where all my family and friends live. I kind of always knew this would happen.
Anyway, I've heard a pretty disturbing bit of news while I've been here. Shell Corporation has its sights set on the Sacred Headwaters in Northern BC for coal-bed methane extraction, an incredibly detrimental project to the environment and the native people who live in the area. If there is anything you can do to help out (ie. don't buy your fuel from Shell) that would be excellent. For more info you can go to www.skeenawatershed.com
Also, Molly made a small mistake with her visa and now is being detained in Russia for an unknown amount of time. Please lend her whatever love and support you can. She really needs it.
It's Remembrance Day today, so I'm sure you've all taken a moment. I took a moment to remember my Grandad who served in the merchant navy in World War 2.
Love you all, see you very soon!
