the scene:
he: riding cross missouri in the tour van to play a show at Truman college. Possibly slightly hungover, scruffy, in the back seat of the van.
me: driving around south city looking for a specific bosnian restaurant, concentrating on too many things at once.
the dialogue:
he: so, you know the price of an abortion?
me: well, (turning corner) i think it depends on the term. you know, later trimester is going to be more than first trimester. it might start at, say, $300 and range up to $500. something like that.
he: (slight pause) oh, cause according to this billboard i just passed, it costs one human life.
me: (another pause) yeah, funny how i just know that....
he: you haven't ever had an abortion, have you?
me: um, no.
