Selamat Sore (Good Afternoon!)

Jun 21, 2004 16:28

The date is wrong on this. It's really the 6th but whenever I posted last it said it was much later, so, oh well!

I've been in Indonesia for about a month now. It's amazing. So much happening and so many amazing people.
I left Bali a week ago to come here to Yogya, a large city in central Java. It's very different from Bali, especially because most of the people are Muslim. Prayers have awoken me every morning at 4:30.

I have seen:
*Borobodur, the largest Buddhist Candi (temple) in the world
*Prambanan, an ancient Hindu Candi
*the Kraton (palace), where the Sultan lives
*the water castle, where the past Sultans used to bath with their harem (w00t)
* the bird market, with every type of bird imagineable, food for the birds (maggots, crickets)Plus, Pythons, cobras, scropians, iquanas, sad looking puppies and kitties, gerbils and hamsters, BATS and MONKEYS! Baby Monkeys in cages. The man who attatched himself to my small group (an older Aussie lady and an even older French) was working on preventing poaching etc. so he was visiting the market looking for violations. And her found plenty!
Tonight I will go to see a Wayang Kulit, a shadow puppet performance. In the monring I will leave Yogya and hea dtoward Bromo, an enormous and currently VERY agitated volcano. I will stay there overnight then return to Bali to Kuta/Legion where I will soak up some sun and stare at the Indian ocean, then maybe try my hand at surfing. Tons more to do in Bali and maybe a day trip to Lombok too. Everyone says it is the way Bali was 20 years ago...Might be nice to see!

It is hot and humid here, with little rain. The people are freindly and all smile or nod happily. I'm so lucky to be here!

My Indonesian is imporving slowly but surely!

Sampi Nanti!
(see you later!)
