A firm tug at his sleeve drew Daniel Jackson’s attention from the alien tablet. At his elbow stood a young girl, just a little over three years old, with her mother’s blonde hair and her father’s brown eyes.
“Hello, Arelle,” he said and turned his chair to lift her onto his knee. “I didn’t know your mommy was visiting.”
“Mommy’s seeing Carolyn.” Arelle rolled her eyes, looking very like her father at that moment. “Dada says I’m to have a brother. Or maybe a sister.”
“And which would you prefer?”
Arelle made a moue of disgust. “I want a kitten.”
It took Daniel a great deal of effort not to laugh out loud. He ruffled the little girl’s blonde curls affectionately. “You should ask your dada about that, Arelle.” A thought occurred. “Is he here as well?”
She nodded. “Talking to unca Teal’c. I was supposed to stay with him, but I was bored.”
“Oh dear. Well, perhaps we should find him. He’ll be worried about you.” Avoiding Baal becoming concerned for his mate and offspring was a high priority: things tended to explode otherwise. Daniel stood up and put the girl on his right hip. “Should we see if the commissary has any lollipops?”
Brown eyes widened in interest. “Yes,” Arelle said firmly. “We should.”
One visit to the commissary and two lollipops later, Daniel delivered a decidedly sticky Arelle to her father. Daniel wasn’t sure he was ever going to get used to the sight of a Goa’uld System Lord with a child on its knee. Arelle curled against her father’s chest and stuck a thumb in her mouth.
“She just turned up in my lab,” Daniel explained. Baal waved a hand.
“It’s all right, Doctor Jackson, she does have a habit of… exploring.” He smoothed a hand over her head. “I knew she couldn’t get far, and that there were people who’d look out for her.”
“Sam’s in the infirmary?”
A smug smile curved the Goa’uld’s mouth. “Indeed she is.”
“Was,” said Sam as she entered. She walked over, her face shining with the glow of motherhood. “What have you been letting our daughter do, Baal?”
“Investigate.” He put a hand on her hip when she bent to kiss him. “She is curious.”
“You’re sticky.”
“She’s stickier. Talk to Doctor Jackson about that.”
Daniel spread his hands as Sam turned to him. “Hey, she wanted a kitten. Least I could do was to get her a lollipop!”
Sam arched her eyebrows. “A kitten?”
He glanced at Arelle, watching the conversation from the safety of Baal’s knee. “Yeah, as opposed to a brother or sister.”
Sam blinked, then shared a look with Baal. Laughing, she reached out and reclaimed her daughter. “That’s my girl. You want a kitten.”
Arelle nodded. “Yes.”
Stood across from Sam, Daniel was able to witness the twin looks that she and her daughter gave Baal. He felt a little sorry for the System Lord as he groaned at being blatantly manipulated.
“Whatever,” he capitulated with a wave of his hand. “I know when I’m outnumbered. Hopefully, the next will be a boy and even the odds a little.”
“I’m not saying,” Sam replied, a hand on her stomach.
“Congratulations either way,” Daniel said, hoping to stop the argument before it started. “I hope this pregnancy is less eventful than the last.”
At least they could all agree on that.
