You look so fine
I want to break your heart and give you mine
You're taking me over
It's so insane
You've got me tethered and chained, I hear your name
And I'm falling over
I'm not like all the other girls
I can't take it like the other girls
I won't share it like the other girls
That you used to know
You're taking me over
Over and over
(Drown in me one more time, hide inside me tonight)
(Do what you want to do, let’s pretend, happy end)
Ending with letting go
Let's pretend, happy end
I live in E1 so Whitechapel is my ‘hood. One day I found myself randomly joining an evening Ripper walking tour, which was fascinating. The story ended up disturbing me a lot more than I thought it would, so I watched a bunch of stuff in order to work through my reaction - documentaries, In Hell, and of course this show.
I’m not sure where the Louise Iver/Lucifer stuff is going, but I find it quite exciting and hopefully not too shark-jumpy. After s1 I mostly had the show on the background, so never really zoned in on Kent until the last episode of season 4, when you really can’t construe Kent awkwardly asking Chandler out for a drink any other way than the way it came across. Only upon rewatch did his crush become so painfully obvious that I can’t believe I missed it the first time. As far as the vid goes, I was glad to have an opportunity to explore this slightly lighter side of the show rather than the truly gory and emotional core of it. But it being Whitechapel, even the lighter romance feels doomed, and tainted with blood and death.
Kent kept unintentionally coming across in earlier drafts as some sort of creepy serial-killer type. I hope that isn’t still the case in the final version because it wasn’t what I wanted, but it was quite strange that the footage/music lent itself so easily to that. Plus series 4 was a bit ominous about Kent's suppressed anger issues and I hope the show doesn’t run with the idea. Given what has happened to older members of the squad, it’s within the realm of possibility, but I hope not for Kent’s sake.
I also wanted to approach this year’s Festivids with as much stylistic diversity as I could manage, so flung my basket of effects at it, for better or for worse. The location shots are so much a part of the fabric of this show that I kept putting them in, although fully cognisant that they’re all of the lights and towers of the City rather than the arty slums of Whitechapel. If I really needed to justify it, I think you can say that’s the metaphor for Chandler as Kent sees/emulates him, a shiny City man with his bespoke suits and aloofness. (I was going to say Kent himself is a little bit Shoreditch, but then didn't know whether that was mean. :P )
And no matter how many times I rewatch that shower clip, my first thought is always "damn, but that suit is gonna be ruined." Girlfriend iz ded, true, but dammit it's Savile Row. The heart weeps.
