vividcon vid recs of doom, pt 2
I was going to post a number of recs in this post, but recent events got me to thinking and right now I would only like to rec two vids from the Challenge show. The theme for challenge, of course, was FUCK YOU. I loved pretty much every vid that came out of the challenge show (even stronger than Premieres, I think) but these two speak to me on a very personal level (probably in a very different way to the vidder intended) so they deserve their own post, if only as a gateway to me spitting my mouthful of poison.
At VVC my roomies kept telling me I'm an unapologetic bitch, which I love. It feels like that part of me is not often shown online, at least not publicly, because somewhere there's still the need to come off like Miss Nice Guy who pussyfoots around and tries not to offend anybody. But I'm sick and tired of that. If this is not your cup of tea, you can fuck off.
I Want You (She's So Heavy) by kiki_miserychic, SPN/Planet Terror/Zombieduck
To all us multinational roomies including honorary roomie bradcpu, the double-blind didn't do jack because immediately after the vid finished we looked around at each other and said "Whitney? Yeah, Whitney." and that was that. As I say time and time again, nobody does a mindfuck better. This is probably the most grotesque vid I've ever seen, not just visually but also in a way what it says about SPN (the show and the fandom) and about vidding practices, and the Fuck You is just so incredibly delicious.
I can't deny it's always soul-crushing when people look at something that you've devoted so much time and effort to and then tell you why it didn't work for them and why it threw them out and why they didn't like it. Sometimes it's an entirely personal reaction on their part, and sometimes the issue runs deeper. It's a valid opinion; point taken on an intellectual level. But on a purely instinctive level? I think I'm not alone in simply wanting to say "oh, wow, um, fuck you." For me, this is what this vid says. Hate the ten thousand layers of effects? Hate the explicit zombie porn? You don't get it? It throws you out? This is Whitney saying "fuck you, this is who I am anyway", and I'm right there with her.
That was my personal fuck you. Now onto the community fuck you.

The backlash has started, and for a while as I read the unfavourable comments on and about this vid, I seriously felt ashamed to admit that I liked it. But since we're on the subject, fuck that shit. I freaking LOVED this vid. I love the song, I love the editing, and I love how it's used with the three interestingly incongruous fandoms/characters. Yes, I know it doesn't invite one particular reading. Yes, I know there doesn't seem to be any coherent theory that ties it all together. But that's exactly what I love about this vid. It creates dissent. morgandawn said it's like a Rorschach test and I completely agree. For the first time in my life I feel like I can completely make my own reading of the vid and not care about vidder intent, and I seriously don't think the vidder cares, either.
So this is my reading: fuck you, fandom, for all your politically-correct wank. Fuck you for all your overanalysis of race, of gender, of violence while still squeefully embracing all that these shows have to offer. Fuck you for your endless debates. Fuck you for your self-righteousness. Fuck you for expressing unqualified opinions on issues that you know very little about. Fuck you for marginalising male fans and acting as though he has nothing to say just because he's a privileged white male. And.... I'm done.
