Fanfic?! YEAH!!

Jul 02, 2008 03:24

So, finally, I've completed an Avatar fanfic. Ideas for fanfics where Katara confronts Zuko have been swimming in my head since I first saw The Western Air Temple. Hopefully, I'll have a title tomorrow.

Title: SOON, I PROMISE, THERE WILL BE A TITLE.
Author: obsessive0514
Rating: PG, I guess.
Characters: Katara, Zuko.
Warnings: Spoilers for The Western Air Temple.
Summary: (Better summary tomorrow, I'm really tired) Katara asks Zuko if he ever thought of Aang as a kid when he was chasing him.
Notes: I thought of this fic after watching Koh's Lullaby by devimelete, a video that reminded me of just how much that Aang has been through. I also want to add that this is my first completed fic in a LONG time, I wrote it after midnight, so it might not be that well written. But for once I was on a roll.

Zuko wants my approval. He sits across from me while I cook dinner, leaned against a pillar. He watches me, but avoids eye contact.

“So…” he starts, “what’s for dinner, Katara?” I wince. I wish he’d just call me “Water Peasant” like before. He notices my reaction. “I’m sorry…” And I’m getting sick of his apologies.

Silence.

“Soup. Random ingredients. Pretty much anything edible. The usual.”

“Sounds… Good!” He tries to sound grateful. “Oh! I thought I should tell you, Aang’s been making a lot of progress lately.” I hate when he uses Aang’s name, too.

“Great.” But I shudder when he calls him “The Avatar” even more.

“Yeah, he’s a really talented kid. I mean, I guess I should have expected that, considering he’s the Avatar and all…”

Face it, Aang, you’re nothing but a big prize to him.

“Did you realize that before?” I snap.

“What?”

“When you were chasing Aang, did it ever occur to you that he’s a child?” My voice chokes.

He stares, more shocked than ashamed or defensive at this point.

“He’s twelve years old! He’s a child and an entire nation wants him dead!” I begin to shout. “Did you ever stop to think about what you were doing?!”

“I-”

“NO! You never did, did you?! You were too obsessed with your ‘honor’, too obsessed with getting that creep you call ‘father’ to not hate you, to see that all you were doing was scaring a kid!!”

I stand.

“Just think about it for a minute. This naïve twelve-year-old finds out he’s the Avatar, freaks out, runs away and gets frozen for a hundred years. Then, he wakes up to find the world in turmoil, his people slaughtered, and on top of all that he needs to MASTER, not just learn, all four elements and defeat the firelord in a few months!! But that just wasn’t enough, was it?”

The shame kicks in. He doesn’t speak.

“Of course not! No, then some teenager with anger issues starts chasing him to every corner of the planet to give to his sick daddy dearest! Don’t you get it?!”

He wipes his eye. “Yes, I-”

I let every tear pass. “I don’t think you do!” I scream. He looks down at his feet.

He knows it’s true.

“Well? What do you have to say for yourself?! Are you ‘sorry?!’”

“Of course I am!”

“Well, it doesn’t matter! It's been done!”

Zuko is saved by Sokka’s dinner announcement. Aang asks him if everything’s okay.

“Yeah, just hungry,” he says with a remorseful smile.
