“Get down,” Yuto whispers as he clutches his trident.
A canon sounds in the distance.
“Damn,” Yamada says under his breath. “Only four of us left.”
Yuto glances cautiously at the forest around them.
“We better find shelter soon,” He says. “I think there’s a nearby cave or something. Pretty sure it’s not that far off.”
The tall boy starts to walk in the direction of the setting sun.
“Wait,” Yamada calls out.
Yuto turns. “Yes?”
Yamada sighs as he plays with the tip of his knife.
“I think. J-just. Maybe it’s time we separate,” He says.
“What?” Yuto says, looking hurt and angry at the same time.
“It’s the Hunger Games, Yuto. Four of us are left,” Yamada says. ‘I don’t want to be the cause of your death,’ is what he doesn’t add.
“We can’t talk about this right now, Yama-chan. Don’t be ridiculous,” Yuto says as he moves towards the setting sun.
“I’m serious!” Yamada yells. “We can’t hide away forever. You just called me Yama-chan.”
“That’s your name!” Yuto yells back, no longer caring that another tribute could be hiding in the woods, ready to shoot or maim them.
“This wasn’t- isn’t supposed to happen, Yuto-kun! We’re Careers. We’re expected to win this thing.”
“Well it doesn’t help that you’re practically telling everyone where we are,” Yuto retorts.
“We can’t both win!” Yamada says, tears filling his eyes. “We can’t. There’s one victor, Yuto-kun. Only one, and I can’t stand to watch you die.”
Yuto hears a distant birdcall and he pulls Yamada deeper into the forest.
“We won’t die, Yama-chan. This won’t die,” Yuto says as he gestures to both of them.
“And what is this?” Yamada asks defiantly. “Two allies trying to win? Two fools thrown into an arena of children? Two murderers trying to bring back glory to their district?”
He pauses.
“We weren’t supposed to fall in love,” Yamada says fiercely.
“But we did,” Yuto replies. Then Yuto steps closer to Yamada in the dying light and kisses him.
Yamada blinks back in shock but slowly gives in. He kisses him back and wraps his arms around Yuto’s neck.
“Everyone- our districts, the Capitol, Panem- can see us,” He whispers in between kisses.
“Good,” Yuto says as he goes in for another kiss.
When they break apart, Yuto gives Yamada a small smile.
“Now tell me if that was worth fighting for,” Yuto says.
“Definitely worth it,” Yamada says not sure whether to hide or wipe that grin off Yuto's face by kissing him again.

Much later Yuto and Yamada stand on top of a hill. They are the last two tributes.
“Nightlock,” Yamada whispers as he holds out the poisonous berries.
Yuto takes a handful. “On three,” He says. They stand facing each other. One hand holding the other. One hand holding their death sentence.
The Capitol cannot have a victor. We won’t let them break us.
“One.”
I’m sorry. I’m so so sorry.
“Two.”
I love you.
“Three.”
