English Lit, eh? I'm English-Education, so this is evne better news to me. ^^ I just usually hold back on that since wanting to teach middle-schoolers especially if you read Nabari is usually seen as a sign of madness.
Also? On the intersex thing for Yoite? He's more of a fun study for his identity thing. While he's still deeply confused, he ends up identifying himself as Male. And actually...his intersex status makes the relationship between him and Miharu that much more fascinating. (Ie: Is it first love? Is it friendship? so on and so forth.)
As for the family thing, YES. So agree with you. Breaking down Shimizu clan dynamics on this end for months now in epic rambling fanfiction. Because that's how I break stuff down. XD But even the concepts of romance in the series (like with Koichi and Raimei?) are made complex and fascinating, too. And really, the characters aren't spared the violence and the nastiness of the hidden world just because they're children. (Noted exception is Yukimi, but even Yukimi has to decide to do that seemingly as a backlash to his abusive dad.)
AND YES. RAIKOU IS LEFTHANDED. I noticed this while watching his fighting, but also probably only focused that hard because I was working on polishing him up for some RP apping that I never actually did. SIGH. I'd have difficulty explaining why that makes him ten times more awesome as a swordsman, and more dangerous, too, but there you go.
