It might be far away and just as staticy, but there is a very loud, sort of aggravated (though slightly smug) response to all of this in the background.

No response to the outside world, but Claire might make a face and shake her head and say under her breath in a childish tone, "Getting any response is significant."

Overriding that: "Who's that guy?" Does she hit him? In a non-literal sense.

"I have an idea." This is serious.

"Comforting." Very serious.

He stares at her, speaking in a level tone that amplifies the importance of this.

"Go down to the kitchens. Borrow a roll of tinfoil. Come back. Fashion a hat out of it, and stand here and see if you can amplify the reception."
