D-I-V-O-R-C-E/Some things just aren't meant to be

But has that really stopped them before?

1. The Brennan/Booth household as amazing counters on the island.  Wood on the edge; marble in the middle.  I want these counters.

2. That was...hard to watch.  At the crime scene - JESUS.  They haven't been this openly hostile since the first season.

3. BUT, you know what was really great about it?

4. Brennan Booth'd all over the face, and to get back at her, Booth Brennan'd all over the place.  TEFLON JARS OR WHATEVER FOR BONE FRAGMENTS.  Do you know how hard these people have worked to get to know each other.

5. Which is my point, really.

6. Some things just aren't meant to be.

7. But that doesn't really mean that they can't be.

8. In my recap for the S6 finale, I wrote about the difference between Hodgela and B/B.  An excerpt:
  • If there’s anything that Show is clear about, it’s that there’s more than one kind of family. There are the ones on purpose - that’s Angela and Hodgins. They are on purpose. They’re that “meant to be” type of thing, where they slip together, like pieces of a puzzle.
  • 114. B/B are not.
  • 115. They are not meant to be. He’s a circle, and she’s a square. There is no fitting of any sort.
  • 116. But they say fuck it.
  • 117. B/B are, above all else, about flying into the face of The Way Things Should Be and saying that they’re not interested. I read an interview with Stephen Nathan where he said, “Over the past six seasons, these two people have disagreed about every single thing except each other.” They’re in love, and they’re not supposed to be, and they’re not meant to be, but by damn, it really doesn’t matter. Yeah, it’s harder than Angela and Hodgins. It’s frequently like banging your head against a wall. But they keep on trying to knock that wall down, over and over, until it’s dust, and there’s nothing left between them. And if that’s not love, too, then I really don’t know what is.

9. So, this is a bit of the head/wall banging.

10.  And y'all, Brennan went to Sweets!  Do you know what kind of progress this is?!  That should would go to a psychologist and would then give his opinion weight?  When Booth's the one in that convo saying that they're more than psychology, we know we've got a different ballgame.   Brennan might say she can change back, but we all know that's not how this works.  Brennan has been changing bit by bit for too long.  She would recognize her younger self, and in some ways, she clings to her, because that's the shell she still has on the outside.  But it's gotten so thin.  It's just a veneer.  Like she told Booth, not so long ago, she's no longer impervious.  She's strong.  And that's what makes all the difference.

11.  And Booth can say what he wants - of course they're more than psychology - but Sweets has it pegged.  Brennan knows deep down that Booth and Christine are necessary to her happiness.  Being away from Booth for three months had to be terrible, and her coming back, wanting to do everything on her own, it's just her trying to prove to herself that she doesn't need him.

12. You know, maybe she doesn't need him.  Honestly, I've never been all that impressed with needs.  Air, you need.  Water, you need.  A roof over your head, you need.  Your happiness can certainly be injured or enhanced by having each of these things, but they're something more basic than desire, less complicated than making a decision.

13. But whether she needs him or not, she wants him.  And that's a horse of a different color all together.  Because wanting means you've made a choice, deep down, that you feel passion about it.  That it's not just about surviving, but about living.  Do you know how long Brennan wasn't living?  Years and years, she just hit herself away, but Booth, to steal the phrase, made her live wide and have all of the stuff, everything that happens, eventually.

14. It can't be easy to have that all settle for her.  And Booth, he's trying to keep it calm, but we know how hard it must have been for him to be abandoned again, however good the reason.

15. They've always been these abandoned people.

16. I love that this season seems to be asking the question, "What happens after everything happens?  What's the follow up to 'eventually'?"  Stories hardly ever get told past the point we reached in the S6 finale.  This one is going for it.

17. Other notes:

18. Booth in that v-neck t-shirt at the end of the episode.  OH.  MY.  GOD.

19. No.

20. Really.  REALLY.

21. Angela welds.  Of course she does.

22. However, Angela FINALLY says to someone, "WTF, you want me to take all of these confetti pieces and do what, now?"  Because they ask Angela to ridiculous things.

23. Which of course, she did.

24. And when Booth looked at Brennan in the Bone Room, and he smiled...y'all.  Y'ALL.

25. Angela still doesn't have a stool.  Just sayin'.

26. And when she told Brennan she could call her in the middle of the night.  I'm telling you, Brennan/Angela are some of the best relationship moments on this show.

27. I have to admit, this all makes me feel ficcy.  We shall see if that comes to pass.

28. Overall, GREAT episode.  The big knock on S7 was that there was zero angst (until the end).  Well, we're going to angst.  Because this is not easy.

29. Because this is not meant to be.

30. But that's never stopped them before.

8x02, bones, season 8
