Y'all should check out my talented friend Kelly's film at: http://www.cbc.ca/exposure/node/827 and then vote for it. :)

I'm currently considering options for the possible purchase of a 400 or 500mm lens for my camera, given that the full-time hours that summer gives me have allowed me a more indulgent budget than usual. The process of picking a lens is even less straight-forward than I thought it would be, because it seems that with every feature of a lens comes a tradeoff.

How important will vibration reduction be when I'm out taking pictures? How much faster are the 'hi-speed' autofocus lenses, really? If I buy a 400mm lens, rather than a 500mm lens, will it be enough of an improvement over the 300mm that I don't regret spending the money? Will I end up wishing that I'd just waited for another couple of years and bought an AF-S lens instead of a cheaper AF lens? (the cheapest AF-S lens by Nikon is currently about $5000, which is obviously not possible at the moment)

*sigh* Does anybody out there know a thing or two about telephoto lenses, that they might share some wisdom with me?
