Crochet

I learned how to chain at least ten years ago, but I never really did much beyond a simple little garland for my parents' christmas tree. It sort of fell off of my radar after that, and I really didn't think about it at all. A little over a year ago, I started again, and I've been crocheting on and off over the last year.

I recently finished an afghan, so I'm terribly proud of that. It took me about six months, but I am terribly erratic, so there was at least a month or two there in the middle when I wasn't working on it.

I don't know what the stitch is called, but its just 1sc, 1dc, 1sc, 1dc, over and over again. This is definitely the largest thing I've ever finished.

Since I finished that, I've been doing a little bit of experimentation. The first thing I decided to try was a sock. I looked up several patterns, but I guess I don't really know how to read them properly, or else I know nothing about sock anatomy. I ended up doing it without a pattern, and it turned out a lot better than I expected.

Strangely enough, getting the size right for the toes took me more tries than getting the heel right.

After that, I decided to see if I could crochet a belt:

and then a bracelet:

I'm not entirely sure how they turned out, although the stretchiness of crochet means the belt can only be used decoratively.

I've found that it's really nice to have something to occupy my hands while I watch tv or listen to music, so I won't be stopping anytime soon. I've already picked out the colors for my next afghan:

what: art, interest: crochet, !rl
